On Friday, over 600 guests gathered at the American Consulate General to attend the 57th annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and reception. The tradition of displaying a magnificently illuminated Christmas Tree on the balcony of the "Little White House on the Alster" each year originated in 1951. Hamburg’s police and firefighters delivered and set up the 15 meter tall tree which was donated by the property management company hgv. The tree, decorated with "American" multicolored lights, has become a symbol of the close ties between the U.S. and Hamburg. Following opening remarks by Consul General Karen E. Johnson, guests of honor Charge d’affaires John Koenig and Senator Christoph Alhaus officially lit the tree.

For millions of people, the Christmas tree is an iconic image of the holidays. But unlike the days of yore, today's generations have many options to consider for their holiday tree. This year, make your Christmas tree eco-friendly with five simple tips from the elves at Earth911:

Trigger writes "At our work we were decomissioning six old HP/Compaq servers to clear up space for new servers and, naturally, each server had a fairly large raid array. Instead of formatting every hard drive (would have taken weeks performing a DoD level wipe) and disposing them all together with the servers, I decided to disassemble the hard drives and recycle them into something neat. With a lot (a lot) of patience, I made this shiny Xmas tree. In total there are around 70 old SCSI hard drives, between 9gb and 18gb in size each. They were nice and chunky, oldschool style. There were quite a few different hard drive models, which is good because they each had different bits which I could use. The Xmas tree is made with parts from hard drives only except for one nut which I had to purchase for $0.

Ian Tree, an IT consultant from the Netherlands, has started a campaign to convince IBM to open source the code for Notes/Domino. Hoping for results similar to the push for Sun to open source Solaris which finally saw success in 2005, Tree makes the simple point that it wont happen until someone asks. "By being an open source product, Tree is also hoping that Domino becomes something schools use to teach groupware and application development concepts, which is the holy grail for future market adoption. This is how various Unixes, relational databases, Linux, and a raft of other products eventually became commercialized. While the idea of open sourcing any proprietary program is appealing, in as much as it sets a program free to live beyond the commitment (or lack thereof) of its originator, it is hard to see why open Notes/Domino would ha

building tree israel photo Israel is not the only place in the world where building and development come into constant conflict with flora and fauna, but a lack of respect for trees in this semi-arid country has long been a thorn in the side of environmentalists. One oft-heard complaint relates to the tendency of contractors to leave not a single tree or bush standing on new building sites in the wake of their tractors. However, luckily enough for the Israeli tree, Israel's current legislature contains some very energetic green lawmakers, who have been awfully busy over the past few years making ...

Wired editor Thomas Goetz explains himself (for the silence of his blog over the past few months): he's begun writing a book, to be called The Decision Tree, which will aim to "lend a clarity of purpose and vision" to personal genomics and personalized medicine. As individuals continue to take newfound charge of their own health, the field needs to be hashed out. Making use of risk factors, acting in collaboration, and taking early, predictive steps to prevent disease are all part of a whole new decision-making process, Goetz says. "This can be characterized as a decision tree, a series of informed choices we will make to minimize uncertainty and optimize our outcomes." He's also renamed his blog from Epidemix to The Decision Tree to better tie the book and his blog together.
