Verizon Awarded $31 Million in Cybersquatting Suit

Domain name registry OnlineNIC has been ordered to pay Verizon Communication $31.15 million in a cybersquatting case filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San José. Verizon accused OnlineNIC of registering 663 domain names that were identical or similar to Verizon trademarks. Along with the summary judgment, OnlineNIC must transfer the domain names to Verizon and not register any additional domain names containing Verizon trademarks. OnlineNIC did not contest Verizon's request for a default judgment and the company is not out of the woods yet as they are facing similar suits filed by Microsoft and Yahoo. Microsoft accused the company of registering 97 domain names that contained or were very similar to Microsoft trademarks and has requested a default judgment as well.

WIPO: Singapore Treaty on the law of trademarks to enter into force in 2009

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced that a new international treaty setting standards for trademark registration procedures will become effective in 2009, following its ratification by Australia on December 16 2008. This is the tenth ratification of the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks ("the Singapore Treaty") and will allow the treaty to enter into force on March 16 2009.

I've been considering buying myself a "netbook" recently -- the mini-notebook computers that have become quite popular in the last year or so. As was recently discussed, such mini-notebooks have been around for years, but have finally figured out how to hit that right sweetspot that makes them worth buying in large numbers. I'd been following the various products on the market to try to figure out which one to get, but I realized recently that I had no idea where the whole "netbook" classification had come from. The Asus EeePC got plenty of attention when it launched about a year ago, and then there were plenty of follow up machines -- and somewhere along the line they all got lumped into the "netbook" category.

Psion has sent "cease and desist" letters to some netbook-oriented web sites ordering them to stop using the term "netbook". jkOnTheRun says: "The letters claim that the term netbook is trademarked by the firm that produced the Psion netBook in the early 2000's."
