Best Buy offering eleven GH III tracks for ordering a crappy Metallica CD

Destructoid writes, "As part of some kind crazy limited supply promotion, Best Buy will be dishing out "exclusive bonus tracks" for Guitar Hero III for anyone willing to order Metallica's upcoming CD, Death Magnetic. It isn't clear as to what tracks can be downloaded via Best Buy's instructions, but one would assume that a few Metallica tracks would be included with the package."

Wal-Mart Ends DRM Support

An anonymous reader writes "So, you thought you did well to support the fledgling music industry by purchasing your tracks legally from the Wal-Mart store? Well, forget about moving these tracks to a new PC! Since they started selling DRM-free tracks last year, there's no money to be made in maintaining the DRM support systems, and in fact, support is being shut down. Make sure you circumvent the restrictions by burning the tracks to an old-fashioned CD before Wal-mart 'will no longer be able to assist with digital rights management issues for protected WMA files purchased from Walmart.com.' Support ends October 9th."

Nokias Comes With Music Doesnt Come With Over The Air Downloads

So much for a revolutionary service. When Nokia’s Comes with Music launches in the UK next month, it will not support over-the-air-downloads, reports Music Ally. The service which rolls out on the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 5310 XpressMusic phone is available on a pay-as-you-go contract through Carphone Warehouse, meaning users would rack up huge data charges downloading tracks. Nokia is getting around this by initially positioning the all-you-can eat music service as a PC-based one, with users sideloading tracks from their computers to their phones. But is it just the potentially high data charge that has put Nokia off OTA downloads? Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) 3G iPhone doesn’t allow for OTA tracks either--but this has been blamed on the music labels’ insistence that OTA tracks should cost more and Apple’s refusal to agree to this.

Simply enter the registration code, fill out the short form, confirm your email, and those 20 free tracks are yours...eventually. "

Three-Cent Music Tracks Try To Crack China's Piracy Problem

imageJust how cheap do music downloads need to be before listeners will buy them rather than pull ‘em from P2P? About three cents, reckons one new Chinese platform. That’s how much a track costs at Wawawa, a new offering started by ringtone firm R2G with repertoire from San Fran-based indie distributor Ioda. The service offers up to 88 MP3s per month for 20 yuan ($2.92) - the price set low in a country all too used to pilfering free music. This, Variety points out, is both the first Chinese foray for foreign indies and, in a stroke, China’s largest music store with more than one million tracks, which can also be web-streamed, not just downloaded, for the hoardes of Chinese who use internet cafes.
