AMMAN - Intellectual Property (IP) and Public Health topic has been the focal point of discussion during the fourth day of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) International Seminar on the Strategic Use of Intellectual Property for Economic and Social Development, organized by WIPO in cooperation with the Department of National Library-Ministry of Culture at the Kempinski Hotel, Amman.

Microtransactions in Online Games Today

It honestly surprises me that this topic slipped under the radar and all, but I've been having more than a few discussions and/or arguments over the topic of microtransactions in games. For those who don't know, microtransactions or micropayments are "now ... often defined to mean payments too small to be affordably processed by credit card or other electronic transaction processing mechanism" by Wikipedia. A less abstract definition would be to look at Xbox Points, Wii Points, and anything like that. The gist of these systems seems to be pre-paying for content in large, convenient (for credit-card processing purposes) blocks, and then assigning you credit that can be spent at an associated online store for online content downloaded as part of a game.

Race and Racism In Video Games

SlappingOysters writes "Racism in video games has been a key topic of discussion in the game industry this year, thanks in large part to the controversy surrounding the Resident Evil 5 launch trailer. In this article, GamePlayer speaks to developers, publishers, activists and journalists about the issue to get various perspectives and insights into how the video game industry is moving forward on the topic of racism. A related piece also has interviews with Sue Clark from the UK's Classification Board and Dr. Griseldis Kirsch, a lecturer in Contemporary Japanese Studies, about how racism in video games is viewed by the BBFC and Japan respectively."

In The New Year, End The Act Of Stone Skipping (A Blog Departure From A Haynesville Topic)

It’s the holiday season, a time for reflection on one’s effort toward improving Earth, or doing it no harm. In that spirit, I offer a plea for the end of the past time of skipping stones, and I ask Congress to make this illegal or for the EPA to find it in violation of pro-environment policy.

Answer to Monday's String Conversion Question

The topic of this week's programming question was converting Strings to numbers. The task was to write a program that accepted a series of numbers as a String, convert them to their corresponding number values and add them all together. The program had to display the result to the user and be capable of converting hexadecimal and octal literals.

Community beyond open source: Mac vs. Windows

This topic is particularly interesting to me as in the open-source world we fetish "community" like deity, but also somehow believe that open source has a lock on community. The very fact that TechFlash can ask the question with a straight face suggests that open source may not be the sole repository of communal thinking.

Can SELINUX Impose a Better Confidentiality Over Encryption?

"The current topic of debate on the Debian-security mailing list is about how to shield data which comes from an encrypted file. SE Linux can protect the reading of the data from an encrypted file that one reads from /dev/mem (for all memory of the machine) or /proc//mem (for the memory of the process). But the logic behind is not that uncomplicated as one may assume. There are certain domains with the ultimate privileges in most of the SELinux configuration. To mention a few, there is unconfined_t for a default configuration and sysadm_t for a "strict" configuration. The USP of SE Linux is that it doesn't mandate a domain with ultimate privileges. If a majority of Linux users have an unconfined_t configuration and rest have a "strict" configuration, the domain that can access /dev/mem will always be there.
