I am often asked about how to track time for freelance projects - this is especially important if you bill by the hour or only have a limited amount of time to provide for a project. I just learned about a system called My Intervals that tries to solve both project management and time tracking in one online application. It looks really easy to use. You just set up a task and then click on the start button to start tracking the time. When you're done you click stop and it adds that time into your time sheet and project time list. The part I tend to forget is the "turning off" part of that process, but if you train yourself, I'm sure this would become a very valuable tool. What time tracking software do you use?

The increasing market demand for systems characterized by low-latency, deterministic behavior and the emphasis on the use of commodity hardware and software have led to a new breed of real-time operating systems (OSs), known as enterprise real-time OSs. In response to the demand for accelerated access to such features in a Linux™ kernel, the IBM Linux and Java™ Technology Centers collaborated to provide the first commercially available enterprise real-time Linux kernel with real-time Java support. Extending the PREEMPT RT patch from Ingo Molnar of Red Hat, Inc., the kernel contains additional features that were required to meet the demands of enterprise real-time OS customers. This paper describes how IBM developers helped to direct, implement, and test the real-time Linux kernel, bringing it from software patches to a finished produc

EmagGeek writes "Matthey Meeds, a real-estate agent, was so irritated about having to pay the monthly rental fee that on Tuesday he filed an antitrust suit against Time Warner Cable and its 84 percent owner, Time Warner Inc. The suit alleges that, by linking the provision of premium cable services to rental of the cable box, the companies have established illegal tying arrangements. 'Time Warner's improper tying and bundling harms competition,' Meeds' lawsuit states. 'Since the class can only rent the cable box directly from Time Warner, manufacturers of cable boxes are foreclosed from renting and/or selling cable boxes directly to members of the class at a lower cost.' I pay Comcast over $25/mo for my two DVRs. I'd love to just be able to buy them or build my own.

Real-time computing is often associated with high speed, but this is only one part of the picture. At its core, real-time computing is about predictability -- the knowledge that the system will always perform within the required time frame. The deadlines involved need not be very short -- though they sometimes are -- and the consequences of missing a deadline may not be dire -- though they sometimes are. The key to whether an application is a real-time one has to do with whether its requirements include temporal constraints.

Earlier this week the cable television industry received some good news when a court overturned a previous ruling that had forbidden Cablevision from deploying network DVR. The battle is far from over; additional court review is necessary to debate the issue of how network DVR would threaten copyright laws. However, if the courts do decide that cable companies can move forward with this service, Time Warner Cable will be on board. Much of the underlying technology is already in place so Time Warner believes that it would be possible to deploy network DVR fairly quickly once approval comes from the courts.

Faced with the demands of mission-critical applications, many enterprise developers have pushed the Java language and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to the limit. The most common issue seen in transactional environments is achieving predictable response time or latency – in other words, the time it takes the system to respond to a request or to move a transaction through the IT infrastructure. In such environments, Garbage Collection (GC) moves from being a valued feature to a major headache.

An anonymous reader notes a recent post on the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center site estimating the time to infection of an unpatched Windows machine on the Internet — currently about 4 minutes. The researcher stipulated that the sub-5-minute estimate was valid for an unpatched machine in an ISP netblock with no NAT or firewall. The researcher, Lorna Hutcheson, called for others to post data on time-to-infection, and honeypot researchers in Germany did so the same day. They found longer times to infection, an average of 16 hours. Concludes the ISC's Hutchinson: "While the survival time varies quite a bit across methods used, pretty much all agree that placing an unpatched Windows computer directly onto the Internet in the hope that it downloads the patches faster than it gets exploited are odds that you wouldn't bet on in Vegas.

Concurrent (NASDAQ:CCUR) recently released version 5.1 of its RedHawk Linux real-time operating system. RedHawk Linux is widely used in time-critical applications in simulation and training, data acquisition, imaging, financial services and process control. RedHawk guarantees that a user-level application can respond to an external event in less than 30 microseconds. RedHawk Linux 5.1 dramatically improves the determinism of real-time processes in non-uniform memory architecture Opteron-based systems. RedHawk ensures that all pages of a real-time process are local to a given node and that no other process' pages are using that same node. RedHawk can automatically duplicate libraries and other modules as needed and maintain them simultaneously in multiple nodes to maximize performance.

unreceivedpacket writes "The public radio stations I listen to have been advertising their conversion to HD Radio format for some time. They advertise multiple channels, their second channel playing all classical, all the time. I am interested in purchasing a receiver so I can listen to this extra content, and was also hoping to find a receiver with a built-in recorder so I could time-shift programs that are not otherwise available as legal pod-casts. My initial queries have returned few models that support any kind of digital recording, and the existing ones seem out of production or sorely lacking features. Is this the state of Digital Radio in the US? Are there any legal recording devices for HD Radio? Any good solutions for recording and time-shifting, perhaps through Linux?"
