Anonymous Donations Help Regional Arts

The coming production of “The Nutcracker” by Ballet BC in Vancouver has been rescued by an anonymous benefactor who purchased 1,000 tickets to the show, the CBC reported. Ballet BC had already committed to the production, which will feature the Moscow City Ballet, when it laid off 38 staff members, including its dancers and artistic director. The Vancouver City Council voted to give a one-time grant of $85,000 to the company, and the sale of 1,000 tickets, to be donated to a foundation for poor children, will ensure that “The Nutcracker” will take place as scheduled. Elsewhere, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra has received anonymous pledges of up to $75,000, The Post and Courier reported. In November, the orchestra’s president announced during a concert intermission that the symphony was facing a $250,000 shortfall.
