green teaser

Could this be the thing we've been talking about since last year, even back when no one would believe us? You know, the thing that Konami said might happen, but then apparently didn't say might happen? The thing that Microsoft has recently been talking about being able to run on its platform and hoping to see soon?

Dylan Jones: The Perfect Art Party could be defined by one thing and one thing only. Tracey Emin

I was asked to define the quintessential art party recently, and so I started thinking about location. Was it New York, Miami, Los Angeles or London? But although I've been to art parties in all those fancy-pants places, and although there is such a temptation these days to assume that art, like everything else in the modern media Venn diagram, is a movable feast, I decided it really had to be London. Even though our economy is not exactly in rude health, London is still the city with the real money, still the city with a genuine sense of bohemia, and still the city with the most important artists, the most important galleries. Sure, we're being told it's all about Iran, all about Pakistan. But is it, really?

If art shows are your thing

No matter the season or the time of year, art is the one thing that transcends all else. So if you not interested in the holiday carnival, the balls or even the indoor fairs, maybe the new "We're All As Mad as Each Other" exhibit is for you.

SC World Congress: A budget crisis is a terrible thing to waste

Though the country is currently facing an economic downturn, the state of Michigan has been in a recession since 9/11. That cloud has had a silver lining for the state's CISO, Dan Lohrmann, who optimistically claims that “a budget crisis is a terrible thing to waste.”

Ponting says Smith's grit in SCG Test, the bravest thing he has ever seen

Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has said that Graeme Smith's decision to come out to bat on the last day of the SCG Test with a broken finger, is the bravest thing he has ever seen.

[ART JOURNA] : Unravel the rebus

The primary thing that I want people to do is look at them and go ˇĄhow pretty.ˇ¦ Itˇ¦s like you heard a song and went ˇĄthat sounds nice,ˇ¦ and then you start thinking about the lyrics afterwards. So the first thing I want is that they are attractive to the eyes.ˇ¨

Chess With Friends for iPhone

The first thing you should know about Chess With Friends is that it does not require you to have any friends with whom to play chess. Chess With Friends or Random Acquaintances would be a cumbersome and stupid name, but it describes the app best--and highlights its appeal. It's the next best thing to wandering down to the park or local café and sitting down with a stranger for a game.

A Quick Look at Chandler

"The main thing that makes it different is its approach. One clue is the subtitle on the web page is A notebook you can organize, back up and share!. The traditional way that groupware suites work is that they are one place where you put a whole bunch of different things but each type of thing (appointment, to-do, ...) has a separate cubbyhole. That means you first think about what you have and then put it in the appropriate place.

Tip: Smartphone - Proactively Protect Mobile Data

Got the back-up thing down in your office? Then why don't you have a system in place for your handheld? Losing a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device these days could be as devastating as having your laptop swiped. Lost data files are one thing, hijacked sensitive information such as passwords and account numbers add a whole additional level of anxiety.

Create Links Inside Your Photos

This is a really fun thing to do on your personal website, really. You just take a photo or some other form of graphic or clip art. Then you add links to different websites from different parts of the photo. One thing you can use this for it linking to family member's websites, or maybe a calendar where each day brings a new link for your website's readers.

Open Source: Broken Model Or Breaking The Mold?

Much of the analysis of open source business models seems schizoid: it's either the greatest thing since sliced bread or the worst thing since ... you get the idea. The truth is of course somewhere in the middle, but in what form?

Psystar Ditches Antitrust in Favor of Copyright Abuse

It seems Psystar is taking another approach to the whole “taking Apple on in court” thing it’s been trying to do for a while now. The whole thing started when Apple tried to sue the Mac clone manufacturer for breaching the Leopard EULA and Psystar filed antitrust claims against the Cupertino company.

Is There a Cyberwar, and Is the US Losing It?

kenblakely writes "BusinessWeek is running a story asserting that the 'US is Losing the Global Cyberwar.' This whole cyberwar thing has been discussed a few times on Slashdot where the Chinese are asserted to be using cyberwarfare to attain military superiority. And, of course, there is the whole Russia-Georgia thing. Even the US military is getting in on the action, and the fear of a cyber Pearl Harbor seems almost palpable. I'm curious what the Slashdot crowd thinks about the growing fascination with 'cyberwar': hype to get more money and create new force structure, source of the next world war, or somewhere in between?"

How Amazon's cell phone app can save you money at Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.

Sometime this shopping season, you'll find yourself stuck in a big-box store agonizing over an attractively priced television, DVD player, high-end blender, or some other amazing thing. Can I get it somewhere else cheaper, you'll wonder—or should I snap it up now? And anyway, is this thing all it's cracked up to be? Do other people like it? Do I even really need it?

Scientist debunks 'Grey goo' scenario

A horde of nanoscale robots - invisible to the naked eye but with the ability to replicate themselves - somehow escape into the environment. They consume large amounts of matter as they make copies of themselves. Those copies do the same thing, and those copies do the same thing, until eventually the Earth is nothing but a giant clump of identical tiny robots.

Esther Dyson Grudgingly Defends Internet Anonymity

An anonymous reader writes "In an interview, Esther Dyson, chairman of EDventure Holdings, describes anonymity on the Internet as similar to abortion: a bad practice that people should still have rights to. Calling anonymity one of the greatest disappointments of the Internet's evolution, Dyson said: 'I'm pro choice, but I think abortion is an unfortunate thing. I think the same thing about anonymity: Everybody should have the right to it, but it's not something one wants to encourage.'"
