A potential way to use stem cells to deliver a gene therapy that fights pediatric bone tumors has been discovered by researchers at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The study, so far done only in mice, could lead to a therapy that specifically targets the tumor, and thereby alleviates chemotherapy drugs from damaging other bodily organs.

Newswise - At present, cell transplantation therapy is limited because transplant recipients are forced to take powerful immunosuppressant medications that have toxic side effects and raise the risk of infection. This advance in mice, described in the online version of Gene Therapy, could pave the way for routine use of cell transplants as a therapy for type 1 diabetes in humans.

Video games and fitness have never really gone hand in hand, and it has only been in the past few years that game developers have recognized that there is a small (but growing) demand for games that involve physical activity. Nintendo has been one of the first to try and capitalize on this with Wii Fit, and though the benefits of it are still in the air and still arguable, there's no doubt that it's the start of something much bigger. In what can be seen as supporting evidence of that, a hospital in the UK has decided to make Wii Fit part of a rehabilitation routine for people in physical therapy.

A fascinating new paper from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University describes the development and construction of a mobile robot driven by miniature ultrasonic piezoelectric motors (Squiggle) for minimally invasive cardiac therapy. The robot design builds on previous prototypes of HeartLander, a miniature mobile robot that moves in an inchworm-like fashion. Construction of the system included motor selection, body design, and development of the control system. This paper describes the design of the robotic platform and preliminary testing results in vitro. Development of the robot allows for increased turning capability and higher traction during locomotion, and represents the first step in designing a wireless mobile robot for cardiac therapy.

I HAVE often wondered why I blog. The issues raised are not always the subject of the responses. Instead, reams of incessant personal abuse arrive. These are the responses you don¿t get to see online. Not much point in publicising pure anger if it cannot address the arguments raised. But then, one day recently, after a particularly high dose of cyber-anger arrived most of which I consigned to the delete basket, the purpose of blogging dawned on me.
