The Wired Science blog reports that Google will shut down its scientific data service in January without ever officially launching the product. In an email to beta testers, Google told users that it would nix its Google Research Datasets project, anticipated to help scientists deal with the data deluge by offering them a place to upload their data, in favor of "other activities such as Google Scholar, our Research Programs, and publishing papers about research at Google," the email says.

The KDE Community today announced the immediate availability of "Canaria", (a.k.a KDE 4.2 Beta 2), the second testing release of the new KDE 4.2 desktop. Canaria is aimed at testers and reviewers. It should provide a solid ground to report bugs that need to be tackled before KDE 4.2.0 is released. Reviewers can use this beta to get a first look at the upcoming KDE 4.2 desktop which provides significant improvements all over the desktop and applications. Since the first beta, which was released less than 4 weeks ago, 1665 bugs new bugs have been opened, and 2243 bugs have been closed. Since the release of KDE 4.1.0, more than ten thousand bugs were closed, showing a massive focus on stability in the upcoming KDE 4.2.0 which will be released in January 2009, 6 months after KDE 4.

"With Linux 2.6.28, the kernel hackers have concluded the main development phase of the ext4 filesystem, removing the security warnings that this successor of ext3 was still only meant for developers, testers, and keen experimenters. Extensively rewritten code to manage memory, data media and the GPU is claimed to provide slight or major speed increases, while improvements in various areas of the kernel aim to extend notebook battery life a little. As with every new Linux version in the main development line, there are also hundreds of new or significantly revised drivers. Among the new ones are, for example, those for the Elantech touchpad installed in many Asus Eee PCs and for the Atheros L2 network chip. The kernel hackers have updated the sound drivers to the alsa (advanced linux sound architecture) 1.
