Four types of robot designed to guide, aid and hand out coupons to shoppers were tested Monday at Universal Citywalk Osaka, a shopping and entertainment complex adjacent to Universal Studios Japan. One of the robots, Robovie-II, measuring 114 centimeters in height, is designed to detect and approach shoppers wandering around ‘‘aimlessly’’ and provide them with directions for where they might want to go.

An anonymous reader writes "ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes tested the latest Win7 build against XP and Vista and came to a surprising conclusion: Win7 performs better than the other 2 OSs in the vast majority of the 23 tasks tested. Even installation. 'Rather than publish a series of benchmark results for the three operating systems (something which Microsoft frowns upon for beta builds, not to mention the fact that the final numbers only really matter for the release candidate and RTM builds), I've decided to put Windows 7, Vista and XP head-to-head in a series of real-world tests...'" This review shows only a 1-2-3 ranking for each test, so there's no sense of the quantitative level of improvement.

After the decline in the earlier week, the indices improved in the last week and ended at the upper end of a sideways contracting triangle. After the end of the sharp decline in October, the indices have been staying in a contracting triangle and exhibited descending minor tops and ascending minor bottoms. On Friday, the indices tested the upper end of this sideways triangle and a breakout from this triangle with a strong volume would suggest that the intermediate trend is still up and the indices will reach higher levels. On the other hand, if the indices again start to wind down after having tested the upper end of the triangle, we could see the indices pushing towards the lower end of the triangle and possibly breaking down to test the October lows.

Solid State Drives got a big break in 2008, but even though the new drives have become all the more popular they are far from the primary choice for most. Mechanical harddrives still have the advantage from some perspectives, which partly comes from the fact that file and operating systems are poorly optimized for SSDs. Something you rarely see is tests of the SSD technology in alternative operating systems, which makes Phoronix' latest article extra interesting.

Toren Altair brings news that NASA and the Ad Astra Rocket Company finalized a Space Act Agreement earlier this week to test the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) on the International Space Station. The agreement hinges on a series of requirements for the thruster's performance and efficiency in ground-based tests. "The primary technical objective of the project is to operate the VASIMR VF-200 engine at power levels up to 200 kW. Engine operation will be restricted to pulses of up to 10 minutes at this power level. Energy for these high-power operations will be provided by a battery system trickle-charged by the ISS power system. These tests will mark the first time that a high-power, steady-state electric thruster will be used as part of a manned spacecraft.

An anonymous reader writes "Now that Intel has unleashed its next-generation Core i7 processors, all eyes are turned to AMD and its incoming wave of 45nm CPUs. To get a feel for AMD's future competitiveness, The Tech Report has taken a pair of 2.7GHz 45nm Opterons (with 75W power envelopes) and put them through the paces against Intel Xeons and older, 65nm Opterons in an extensive suite of performance and power efficiency tests — from Cinema 4D and SPECjbb to computational fluid dynamics and a custom XML handling benchmark. The verdict: AMD's new 45nm quad-core design is a notable improvement over the 65nm iteration, and it proves to be a remarkably power-efficient competitor to Intel's Xeons. However, 45nm AMD chips likely don't have what it takes to best Intel's Core i7 and future Nehalem-based Xeons.
