Ponting seeks to play Test in right spirit; Aussies head to India for series

SYDNEY, Sept 21, (AFP): Australian captain Ricky Ponting said Sunday he was hopeful next month’s four-Test cricket series with India will be played in the right spirit. The 15-man Australian squad left here late Sunday with only four players armed with Test match experience in India. The nations were embroiled in an acrimonious series in Australia this year with Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh banned for three matches for allegedly racially abusing Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds during the second Test in Sydney in January. The suspension was later overturned following an appeal hearing, but the relations between the two sides deteriorated as senior Australian batsman Matthew Hayden called Harbhajan an “obnoxious weed” on radio during the subsequent one-day series.

Nikon D90 Photo Gallery

NikonNikon D90 Test photos : We have a full production test sample of the Nikon D90 SLR in the office at this moment, and we expect to publish a full Nikon D90 review soon. In the meantime, a Nikon D90 digital SLR camera is undergoing a thorough, standardized test in our DIWA Lab. Although our workflow is simply overwhelming with the Photokina 2008 in sight, we were still able to make a number of test images with the Nikon D90 today, and we used various Nikkor lenses for the occasion. The much-discussed video feature, which is unique at this moment, will undoubtedly be continued in future generations. However, for now, the Nikon D90 features this unique video function that puts Nikon in the spotlight again as a genuine innovator.

Appeals Court Rules US Can Block Mad Cow Testing

fahrbot-bot tips a story of mad cow disease, a private meat packer that wants to test all of its beef for the disease, and the USDA, which controls access to the test kits and just won an appeals court ruling that the government has the authority to block testing above and beyond the 1% the agency performs. Creekstone Farms Premium Beef sought to test 100% of its beef, in order to reassure its export markets, especially Japan and South Korea, that its beef is safe. Large meat packers opposed any such private testing, because they feared they would be forced into 100% testing and would have to raise prices. The appeals court ruled, 2 to 1, that under a 1913 law, test kits that are used only after an animal is killed still constitute "diagnosis" and "treatment" — this for a disease that has no treatment and is 100% fatal — and therefore

Unigine Tropics Sets Linux OpenGL Precedence

"Back in August we shared some of what we are doing to drive new graphics benchmarks on Linux through the Phoronix Test Suite. With that, we showcased Lightsmark 2008, which was ported to Linux for integration with the Phoronix Test Suite, and Unigine Sanctuary. Unigine Sanctuary showcased the latest work from Unigine Corp, which is a Russian development studio focused on creating cross-platform middleware for virtual 3D worlds. The Unigine Sanctuary demo was stunning, but introduced with the Phoronix Test Suite 1.2 "Malvik" release last week was their latest technology benchmark. Unigine Tropics is an absolutely stunning test with impressive graphics capabilities and it really sets a new precedence for Linux graphics capabilities through its OpenGL renderer.
