The RIAA made waves last week by revealing they were working behind closed doors to have ISPs employ a controversial "three strikes" policy, where users who repeatedly transfer pirated materials could see their broadband connection terminated. Ars Technica notes that the movie industry is working with ISPs separately on a similar plan, with trials already underway. To ease ISP worries that they'd be booting users left and right, the industry has dubbed this concept "graduated response," previously releasing studies claiming that 72% of pirates would stop with just a warning from their ISP. The MPAA claims they don't want to take the extreme step of having a user's line terminated, but it's certainly clear that they'd like to have that option in order to scare pirates into compliance.

You know an economic crisis is big when the big players begin to worry and take measures. Sony has just announced that it plans to cut 8,000 full time jobs, which is about 4% of the work force it employs, while 8,000 collaborators will also have their contracts terminated. The move is designated to save the company around 1.1 billion dollars in one year. The layoffs will take place in stages until March 2010.

davidphogan74 writes "MPC Computers (formerly Micron's computer division) notified the Idaho Department of Labor in a letter on 12/29/2008 that it would terminate its remaining employees. The company had been operating under the protection of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy since November, after it laid off 200 employees in October. MPC said 147 employees would be terminated immediately and 51 would be retained while the company liquidates its assets. Last year, MPC bought the professional business unit of PC company Gateway, which itself had been bought by Acer earlier that year. MPC had sold business technology hardware to mid-sized business, government agencies, and education organizations since 1991."

On Friday, the RIAA announced its plan to end their campaign of suing thousands of alleged downloaders; instead, it has negotiated with ISPs to disconnect subscribers who the RIAA identify as repeat infringers. From what little is known about the system, ISPs would pass along warning emails to the customers the RIAA claims are downloading copyrighted material. Following 2-3 warnings, subscribers would have their connection terminated.

A spokesman for San Diego’s DivX (NASDAQ: DIVX) confirms today the online digital video provider has laid off 21 employees, or nearly 10 percent of its San Diego workforce. We first saw the layoffs reported at TechCrunch. DivX disclosed earlier this month that its chief technology officer resigned, and it’s not clear if these cutbacks were part of that restructuring. DivX said in mid-November its financial results would be hurt after Yahoo terminated a two-year advertising contract.

The transition team of President-elect Barack Obama, in an interesting effort at transparency, has been publicizing all of their meetings with interest groups to their website, and that includes any material being presented by those groups (with public feedback). Whether that accomplishes anything remains to be seen, but it does allow us to see, oh, things like what the MPAA's demands from the Obama Presidency will be. Within the MPAA's wish list (pdf) are requests for "automated detection and removal of infringing content" (ISP filters) and a desire to see the U.S. adopt efforts similar to those recently implemented in the UK and France ("three strikes" polices where your broadband connection is terminated upon the receipt of three DMCA warnings).
