It was a tense moment in the browser wars as 2008 drew to a close: IE and Firefox are battling toward a climactic clash at the top, with less than 50 percent difference between them; Safari is slowly but steadily growing; and Chrome is quickly making its way into fourth place, leaving Opera in the dust. In December, IE and Opera were the only browsers not to show any positive growth; Firefox, Safari, and Chrome all gained.

Malaysia prevailed over Hong Kong by two runs in a tense match in Chiang Mai to progress to the final of the Asian women's Under-19 tournament. After opting to bat, Malaysia were kept down to 82 in their allotted 25 overs by some disciplined Hong Kong bowling, particularly from left-arm spinner Chan Sau Har (5-4-1-2). Hong Kong were on course for a place in the final after captain Keenu Gill made 27, the highest score in the game, to take them to 49 for 3 in the 12th over. However, none of her team-mates made it to double digits and Hong Kong were dismissed for 80. Left-arm spinner Alessandra Shunmugam was the most effective Malaysian bowler, taking 4 for 18.

In December 1938, on a visit to Brussels, W.H. Auden went to the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, which furnished the inspiration for this poem, published in 1940. It was a tense time in Belgium and the world. Madness was afoot in Europe, and many, including Auden, sensed the imminent outbreak of a great conflagration. The culture that had existed in Europe up to that moment would perish and a new one would be born. Some elements of the past would be salvaged, of course. Some aspects of European culture have a knack for surviving conflagrations.
