Banks to provide information on salaries, interest to LTU

ISLAMBAD (January 06 2009): Banks would provide information on salaries and interest to the Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU), Karachi for monitoring of withholding taxes from the banking sector. It has been learnt here on Monday that the banks, who received notices for monitoring of the withholding taxes, have approached the LTU with the plea that it would be difficult for banks to simultaneously provide all kinds of withholding taxes related information in consolidated form.

Central Interference: New York Increases Taxes on Videogames

The governor of the state of New York, David Paterson, has announced that he plans to introduce new taxes aimed at creating revenue streams for the embattled budget. One of the newly introduced taxations will be aimed at video games, which will be tariffed more in this territorial division, if the state budget for 2009 is adopted in its current form.

New Yorks proposed iTunes tax

With the Dow having lost one-third of its value this year, New York expects taxes from Wall Street to fall short. Gov. David Paterson (D), the recent victim of a Saturday Night Live lampooning, wants to head off the expected $15.4 billion budget gap with a laundry list of new taxes and fees.

Oregon Governor Proposes Vehicle Mileage Tax

tiedyejeremy writes "As covered by the Crosscut Blog, the Governor of Oregon, Ted Kulongoski, is proposing a change in the funding of the Oregonian transportation system that drops gasoline taxes and, by way of GPS tracking, taxes the number of miles driven, to the tune of 1.2 cents per mile. The reason for the proposed change is that lower fuel consumption via fuel efficiency will leave the system underfunded. The concerns involve government tracking of the movements of vehicles within the state, though this has been denied by ODOT official, James Whitty. I'm wondering how this affects people using the Interstate System and private roads, and if the outputs can or will be used by law enforcement to check alibis."

Digital Music Roundup: NY iTunes Tax?; RIP Mixwit; Free MP3s To Soldiers

NY governor proposes tax on digital downloads : If Gov. David A. Paterson’s budget passes, cash-strapped New York could impose a 4 percent tax on digital downloads of all kinds—books, ringtones, games, VOD movies, and of course, music tracks—to help balance its budget in 2009. The NYT’s City Room said the tax would kick in next June and bump up the cost of a 99-cent iTunes download to about $1.04. State officials say the so-called “iTunes Tax” could add as much as $15 million in revenue the first year it’s enforced, and about $20 million a year thereafter. States like New Jersey have already broadened the scope of their taxes to digital downloads, and in April, New York passed a similar measure (dubbed “the Amazon Tax”) aimed at forcing online retailers to collect taxes for goods “sold” in the state.

Taxes due once savings bond matures

I have some old savings bonds -- old enough that they are not paying any interest. Can I gift these to my child and have him cash them in at his tax rate? Or is there another strategy you would suggest to minimize the tax hit on these? I believe they are Series E, but I am not positive.

Tech Ticker: Palm, Apple, IBM

Palm reported a sixth straight loss after taxes rose and its Treo and Centro phones faced mounting competition from Research In Motion's BlackBerry and Apple's iPhone. The second-quarter net loss widened to $506.2 million, or $4.64 a share, from $8.85 million, or 9 cents, a year earlier, the Sunnyvale-based company said Thursday in a statement. Revenue fell 45 percent to $191.6 million. Palm's phones are losing customers to newer devices from Research In Motion and Apple, while the global recession crimps demand. The company said it delivered 13 percent fewer smart phones in the quarter and revenue from that unit, the company's largest, fell 39 percent from a year earlier. Palm shares fell 30 cents, or 14 percent, to $1.90 in extended trading after closing at $2.

New York Considers an iPod Tax

New York State must be the leader in clever, snarky names for taxes. First, facing a huge budget deficit and noting just how sales to e-tailers was siphoning off sales tax, they imposed an “Amazon Tax,” named after Amazon.com. Now it is apparently looking at a possible “iPod tax,” to plug the huge budgbet deficit gap it has.
