theodp writes "In its just-published patent application for Network Node Ad Targeting, Google hatches plans for identifying the most influential of a circle of friends and providing this 'influencer' with 'financial incentives from advertisers in exchange for permission to display advertisements on the member's [social network] profile' (sound familiar, Jeremy?). Doing so will 'provide advertisers with the option of targeting either all members in the community or advertising only on the profile of the influencer, thereby targeting the entire community,' explains Google. Who says you can't buy friendship!"

As message boards give way to the likes of MySpace and Twitter, digital media companies seek new revenue sources from web site traffic. Buried deep within the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2008 are several provisions which require federally funded colleges and universities to address intellectual property issues with their students. The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) called the items "troubling" because of the "expensive dead-ends" the provisions require. The bill, which is mostly a series of amendments to existing laws, passed the House of Representatives today in a 380-49 vote.

In May, Charter Communications, one of the nation's largest Internet service providers, sent letters to hundreds of thousands of its customers promising "an enhancement coming soon to your Web browsing experience." This was a heroic bit of corporate doublespeak—Charter planned to "enhance" its service by installing software on its Internet lines to scrutinize its customers' browsing habits. The company's aim: to sell lucrative ads tailored to users' interests. For instance, if Charter saw that you'd been reading lots of auto reviews, it might show you spots for new cars.
