(RTTNews) - Video game maker Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS) said Monday morning that it has extended its tender offer to acquire all the outstanding common shares of rival Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (TTWO) until June 16, 2008. The extension of the tender offer by the company for the third time comes even as shares of Take-Two trade higher than the offer price and the number of Take-Two shares tendered to the offer has declined. In response to Electronic Arts' announcement, Take-Two said that the recommendation of its board of directors to stockholders not to tender their shares to the offer remains unchanged. Take-Two, the publisher of the "Grand Theft Auto" series, has been resisting the hostile $2 billion buyout.

Electronics and technology retailer Best Buy is experimenting with a free consumer electronics take-back program at 117 stores in San Francisco, Minneapolis and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. Apparently, the company was prompted by a lobbying group called As You Sow, which encouraged it to adopt the program. (As You Sow actually pretty much forced Best Buy’s hand when it submitted a shareholder requesting that it test a free take-back program. That proposal has been withdrawn.)

Establishing a spacefaring civilization will take a while. Taking the first steps towards creating a permanent human presence in space, as NASA is currently attempting to do, will take decades. Building the infrastructure—legal, political, financial, and technological—to support expansion into the solar system may take even longer. Many political analysts, however, argue that politicians in democratic systems are focused on the short term because their primary goal is to be reelected. That seems fundamentally inconsistent with sculpting sound space policy.

"It’s very easy today to take more pictures in a single week long vacation than ever imagined possible ten years ago. For one thing, not many people had digital cameras ten years ago and those that did had a lot of problems with ample, cheap storage. Compact Flash and SD cards weren’t as inexpensive and voluminous as they are today. And yet today, images coming directly out of the camera can regularly exceed 10MB or more. As I see it, there are two main paths to take when a vacation is planned and the camera will be tagging along. Either purchase more memory cards or purchase a digital storage device. I’d like to take a look at both options and lay down some pros and cons to help you decide which path might be right for you."

If you’re planning to buy a digital camera to take nighttime photos, there are some things to look for that will heighten the quality of your nighttime pictures. Although the best nighttime features will be found on more expensive, high-end cameras, lower-cost cameras will usually have a special preset night scene setting that will take pictures in low light. Look for a camera that let’s you specify the exposure time so you can take longer exposures. Also look for cameras with built-in stabilization or vibration reduction, which will help the quality of the picture during long exposures.

Los Angeles - Metallica have blamed their management company Q Prime for asking bloggers to take down their reviews of rough mixes of the band's new album -- bloggers who were invited to a listening party to hear said tracks, according to a post on Metallica.com. "Our response was 'WHY?!!! Why take down mostly positive reviews of the new material and prevent people from getting psyched about the next record... that makes no sense to us!' So after a few rounds of managerial ear spank and sentencing everyone at Q Prime to 20 push-ups each, we figured why not take matters into our own hands and just post the links here on our site."

syncro writes "The recent massive, multi-vendor DNS patch advisory related to DNS cache poisoning vulnerability, discovered by Dan Kaminsky, has made headline news. However, the secretive preparation prior to the July 8th announcement and hype around a promised full disclosure of the flaw by Dan on August 7 at the Black Hat conference has generated a fair amount of backlash and skepticism among hackers and the security research community. In a post on CircleID, Paul Vixie offers his usual straightforward response to these allegations. The conclusion: 'Please do the following. First, take the advisory seriously — we're not just a bunch of n00b alarmists, if we tell you your DNS house is on fire, and we hand you a fire hose, take it. Second, take Secure DNS seriously, even though there are intractable problems in its business and governan
