On July 22, the National Enquirer first broke the story of John Edwards’s tryst with Rielle Hunter at the Beverly Hilton. Since then, the story gained almost no traction in the mainstream media. Los Angeles Times bloggers, for instance, were directed not to blog about it (a directive that was, in fairness, soon reversed). Editorial boards at all the major newspapers took the cautious road, citing the seeming tenuousness of the claim and the lack of evidence supporting it (the Enquirer published a blurry photo only two days ago, on Aug. 6). The discussions we had in our news meetings following the Enquirer story took a similar tone: Would it be irresponsible to report and publish on what seemed to be an unsubstantiated claim? If the media were to run with it, what would happen if the rumors turned out to be false?

We see all sorts of ridiculous lawsuits floating around, but here's a good one. Eric Goldman has the story of a journalist who was upset about a story written by a local college professor. The journalist felt the story was defamatory, so obviously, he sued Google for $50 billion. Yes, you read that correctly. Pissed off journalist feels that he was defamed by someone totally unconnected to Google... and responds by suing Google for $50 billion. Not surprisingly, the court wasted no time tossing this lawsuit out, and then even slapped the journalist with an order to pay Google's $12,000 in legal fees. The order to pay those legal fees was later removed on a technicality, but as Goldman notes, it appears that judges are getting pretty sick of these sorts of lawsuits, and are finally beginning to punish folks who are filing them.

An anonymous reader writes "The folks at the Edge have published a short story by George Dyson, Engineer's Dreams. It's a piece that fiction magazines wouldn't publish because it's too technical and technical publications wouldn't print because it's too fictional. It's the story of Google's attempt to map the web turning into something else, something that should interest us. The story contains some interesting observations such as, 'This was the paradox of artificial intelligence: any system simple enough to be understandable will not be complicated enough to behave intelligently; and any system complicated enough to behave intelligently will not be simple enough to understand.' After you read it, you'll be asking the same question the author does — 'Are we searching Google, or is Google searching us?'"

Going back to its serial roots, this new STAR WARS adventure feels like a chapter in a continuing story while standing on its own as an individual story. Unlike PHANTOM MENACE it stands on its own. Not only the animation moves this installment into a new direction. The light blue “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” is still present, but the signature text crawl has been replaced by a Gary Owen-ish announcer, filling us in on what has preceded this story. Big on action and pun-filled banter, this film reminded me of the fun I had with SKY CAPTAIN more than any of the STAR WARS prequels.

Our learning assignment this month takes us into the realm of storytelling. This assignment we will be exploring photo essays. A photo essay, or picture story, is a photographers way of showing a more complete story than is possible with one image. It is a collection of images that work together to tell a story.

At Austin GDC 2008, id Software's creative director Tim Willits poked fun at the notion of id giving a talk on game narrative. He then proceeded to give a talk on game narrative, detailing the ways id's new game Rage, in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms, is fusing its story with its technology, the different ways of how telling a story in a game is unique, and how story factors into managing a franchise.

Online sales are growing faster than offline salesno news there. Last months report from the Census Bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce confirms that once againbut it doesnt tell the entire story. And especially in a down economy, retailers should have a clear picture of where sales are taking place.

The Archers is a radio soap opera - "an everyday story of country folk" - that has been running for more than 15,000 episodes since May 1950. What I find particularly intriguing about The Archers in terms of the future of radio is that it is, in a way, happening in real-time. Every evening on Radio 4 the programme contains events that happened (approximately) "today" in Ambridge - so if it's Easter in real-life then it's Easter in The Archers. It's also very topical - featuring real-life events such as outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease or the World Cup. As a drama, each episode is split into distinct scenes - typically indicated by a fading to silence - a convention for audio drama because of its need for clear signposting. The other interesting aspect is the many distinct facets of each scene - which characters are involved, the time o

The MSM are still getting killed on the story of John Edwards and his relationship to racy blonde Rielle Hunter - or should I say his relationship to Hunter's love child? Check out this comprehensive piece by mondoreb from the Blogger News Network. There are a few interesting wrinkles. The first concerns pack journalism. Mondoreb reports: "Because of those 'vigorous denials from campaign staffers,' not one reporter posed the question to Edwards...

THE story of Tengenenge Arts is one of mystical wonder. Mystical in that there is a story about a "singing snake" that alerted artists to the presence of visiting art buyers. Wonder because it houses more than 200 artists who work together, producing sculptures that celebrate Zimbabwean art and its beauty.

The story of kidnapped photographers Nigel Brennan, Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi, and Amanda Landhout continues to be a puzzle with little concrete information. However, according to Reporters Without Borders, the National Union of Somali Journalists has received information that an unnamed militia group is holding them for an unnamed purpose. In a story with so few facts, all we can do is take a glimmer of hope in the word "holding" as it implies that these three people are still alive.
