snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister raises questions regarding the transforming nature of the Web now that Tim Berners-Lee's early vision has been supplanted by today's much more complex model. AJAX, Google Web Toolkit, Flash and Silverlight all have McAllister asking, 'Is [the Web] still the Web if you can't navigate directly to specific content? Is it still the Web if the content can't be indexed and searched? Is it still the Web if you can only view the application on certain clients or devices? Is it still the Web if you can't view source?' Such questions bely a much bigger question for Web developers, McAllister writes. If today's RIAs no longer resemble the 'Web,' then should we be shoehorning these apps into the Web's infrastructure, or is the problem that the client platforms simply aren't evolving fast enough to meet

About a year ago, the Batmobile case mod lit up the internets with a design crafted from a Wal-Mart R/C Tumbler. The mod still kicks ass, but the specs were lame a year ago and are now...one year lamer. Still, it would make for a unique web surfing device and a great way to celebrate the opening of the new movie. Plus, its pretty cheap at the moment (although there is still a week left). Despite the advances in B2B integration technologies such as XML, a recent Forrester report by Ken Vollmer showed that EDI still accounts for 85-90% of B2B transactions. However, the growth projections of other forms of B2B including stateful and stateless XML is expected to grow faster than EDI. Surprisingly, the survey indicated that 61% of respondent trade electronically with less than 10% of their customers. This is due to the fact that cost of EDI prohibited it being implemented with the smaller partners, suppliers and customers. However, time and resources for remediating errors of manual transactions is motivating companies to take a more comprehensive approach to their B2B solutions. Generally speaking, manual transactions are an order of magnitude more expensive to process than automated transactions.

The company on Thursday reported a net loss of US$43.4 million for its fourth fiscal quarter, or 40 cents a share, compared with net income of US$15.7 million last year. That loss is not as bad as it looks because of restructuring charges and the write-off of some bad debts, but even factoring all those charges out Palm still lost US$23.9 million, or 22 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson One were hoping for 18 cents.

The Australian operation of web auction services provider eBay has stepped back from a proposal involving its subsidiary, PayPal. Following public outrage, protests by users and an investigation by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), eBay has dropped plans to make PayPal the only approved electronic funds transfer method on its site. However, a second change, to make it mandatory for PayPal to be included as a payment option for all auctions on eBay, is still being looked at by the watchdog and may also be blocked as anti-competitive. Meanwhile eBay is to retain the services of law firm Deacons, despite the later failing to gain its client an exemption for the PayPal issue from the Trade Practices Act's section 47 before the ACCC

July 14, 2008 - The Riddick film franchise pretty well wore out its welcome with the second movie, but the Chronicles of Riddick saga still seemed strong when Vivendi Games announced the remake of Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. A surprisingly great first-person shooter, Butcher Bay proved that bringing Hollywood into gaming was not a deal with the devil. It made a star out of game developer Starbreeze (which went on to make The Darkness) and it also gave star/producer Vin Diesel a chance to give one of its brightest performances.

The iPhone 3G might have a rather poor battery life compared to its predecessor, but according to tests by PC World, it still comes out ahead of other 3G smartphones. It even beats phones on Sprint and Verizon's EVDO networks, which should be less power hungry as they only use the 3G network for data, not voice and data like HSDPA/UMTS.

The word on the tech street in Japan is that Docomo is still in super secret negotiations to offer the iPhone, but in the meantime the company is still trying its best to show consumers it has innovative chops on par with Apple. The innovations focus on wearable tech including a headset that allows the wearer to control his computer via electrical currents generated by eyeball movements. Also revealed is a cell phone you wear on your finger like a ring, allowing you to use your finger to conduct sounds to your ear (or pretend you're "not" digging gold nuggets out of your ears).
