"Less than a year ago we shared with you the revolutionary steps AMD was taking to deliver significant improvements to their once infamous proprietary Linux display driver and at the same time the work they were doing to foster the growth of an open-source driver for their latest graphics card families. These steps have certainly paid off for both AMD and the Linux community at large. AMD's proprietary driver is now on par with NVIDIA's Linux driver and there are two open-source ATI drivers picking up new features and improvements on an almost daily basis. AMD also continues to publish new programming guides and register information on a routine basis for their latest and greatest hardware. This has been truly phenomenal to see, but AMD has now evolved their Linux support by taking it a large step further.

The activation process for the iPhone 3G should indeed be in two steps, O2 Ireland has confirmed. As part of its release information on the 3G, the company has mentioned that the first part of activation will involve the SIM card being activated in-store. To actually use the phone, however, people will then have to sync the phone with their computer's copy of iTunes, and run through a separate series of activation steps.

Workforce mobility presents new challenges to health care IT groups responsible for HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) security compliance. Though these groups are well-versed in the planning, implementation, support and monitoring required to maintain control of laptop and desktop systems, they are often ill-equipped to provide the same level of oversight for smartphones and PDAs. Health care organizations seeking to build a best-practice mobile environment must often integrate disparate device management, data security and help desk solutions to support a variety of devices. Federal regulations and guidelines clearly outline the sensitive information that IT must be in control of, but as the latest technologies rapidly enter the health care environment, many times the convenience and “cool” factor, or end-us
