Klocwork Insight for C/C++ and Java brings static source code analysis to Java developers. It can help improve code quality while reducing bugs and addressing security vulnerabilities. Its latest version is integrated with a range of integrated development environments, including Eclipse and JBuilder. It also handles popular application frameworks such as J2EE, Google Web Toolkit, and AWT. Java support is available separately or as part of the C/C++ static analysis support within Insight.

jlunavtgrad writes "I recently attended an embedded engineering conference and was surprised at how many vendors were selling tools to analyze source code and scan for bugs, without ever running the code. These static software analysis tools claim they can catch NULL pointer dereferences, buffer overflow vulnerabilities, race conditions and memory leaks. Ive heard of Lint and its limitations, but it seems that this newer generation of tools could change the face of software development. Or, could this be just another trend? Has anyone in the Slashdot community used similar tools on their code? What kind of changes did the tools bring about in your testing cycle? And most importantly, did the results justify the expense?"

Fifteen years ago, the discovery of adult neurogenesis (the production of new neurons) in the highly static, non-renewable mammalian brain was a breakthrough in neuroscience. Most emphasis was put on the possibility to figure out new strategies for brain repair against the threath of neurodegenerative diseases. Yet, unlike lower vetebrates, which are characterized by widespread postnatal neurogenesis, neurogenic sites in mammals are highly restricted within two very small regions. Hence, the fact that protracted neurogenesis in mammals is an exception rather than the rule slowes down hopes for generalized brain repair.

"The measure for finding duplicated code is to search for code duplication within classes and among other classes in the code base. Duplication among classes is more difficult to assess without the help of a tool. Because of the slight changes that copied code can often undergo, it's important to measure code that is not simply copied verbatim, but also code that is similar."

"As we know, static HTML web sites are passé. Yet, Java applets never turned out to be the killer online application platform they possibly could have been. The modern introduction of Ajax has undoubtedly improved the web experience but it's not a panacea. Here's how to get started using the Moonlight development technology from the Mono Project.

Every so often we run into a situation where a traditional static DNS doesn’t satisfy our needs. That’s when Dynamic DNS (DDNS) enters the picture. In this article we are going to cover the basics of dynamic DNS to solve those frustrating situations when the IP of our server tends to change periodically, even though our domain name ought to redirect to the correct IP. Always.

IconCoverity has published the 2008 edition of its Open Source Report. The report uses static code analysis on C, C++, and Java source code to determine the quality of the code. These reports are funded by the US Department of Homeland Security and supported by Stanford University, and are part of the US government's Open Source Hardening Project.
