Sprint-Nextel Severs Its Internet Connection to Cogent Communications

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On October 30 at 4:30 pm Sprint-Nextel severed its Internet connection to Cogent thereby partitioning the Internet. It is no longer possible for many Sprint customers and Cogent customers to directly communicate across the Internet. Sprint did so in violation of a contractual obligation to exchange Internet traffic with Cogent on a settlement free peering basis. Sprint and Cogent are engaged in litigation over this matter. Cogent regrets that Sprint chose to take this unilateral action rather than await a determination by the court as to the rights of the parties. Cogent remains ready to reestablish, on the same settlement free basis as previously existed, the connections that Sprint has severed.

Sprint to hold on to Nextel network

US mobile operator Sprint has decided to hold on to its Nextel network and further invest in the iDEN service. After a review of the iDEN business, Sprint said it intends to "retain and rejuvenate this important asset". Sprint said the iDEN network allows it to offer a unique service, not available with any other operator in the US. Marketing for the walkie-talkie service will continue to focus on iDEN's unique aspects. The company has extended its contract with equipment supplier Motorola for network and infrastructure support. Sprint also plans to launch new handsets, including the Motorola i576 on 2 November and the BlackBerry Curve 8350i later this year. Sprint plans to launch a total of eight new Nextel Direct Connect handsets in 2009, with five expected to launch during the first half of the year.

Sprint Cuts Cogent Off the Internet

superbus1929 writes "I work as a security analyst at an internet security company. While troubleshooting an issue, we learned why our customer couldn't keep his site-to-site VPN going from any location that uses Sprint as its ISP: Sprint has decided not to route traffic to Cogent due to litigation. This has a chilling effect; already, this person I worked with cannot communicate between a few sites of his, and since Sprint is stopping the connections cold (my traceroutes showed as complete, and not as timing out), it means that there is no backup plan; anyone going to Cogent from a Sprint ISP is crap out of luck."

Behind the Cogent-Sprint Depeering

An anonymous reader brings an update to Sprint's depeering with Cogent, which we discussed a few days back — namely, Sprint's side of the story. According to them, no free peering contract had ever existed, Cogent refused to pay the bills to exchange traffic, and after a year Sprint gave Cogent 30 days notice of their intent to disconnect. During this 30-day period, when one or two connections (out of ten) per week were shut down, Cogent made no alternate arrangements to alleviate the impact on their customers — but they had a press release ready when Sprint snipped the final wire. It will be interesting to see how Cogent responds.

Sprint Still Bleeding Wireless Customers - Loses 1.3 million net wireless customers on the quarter...

Sprint's third quarter earnings indicate that customers continue to flee from the struggling wireless provider, the company losing 1.3 million net customers -- slightly more than Wall Street analysts expected. The company posted a net loss of $326 million, their churn (or customer turnover) rate jumped from 2 to 2.15%, and the company's quarterly wireless revenues fell to $6.8 billion (total revenues were $8.8 billion), down 3% from last quarter and 13% from last year. Most of these numbers will likely be made worse when Sprint finally gets around to pro-rating their ETF system later this year.
