Sphere of Influence 'Earth Revealed' Exhibit Teaches About Global Warming, Planets

Real-time maps of the weather, current sea-surface temperatures, a NASA shuttle jetting across the sky. It may sound like a space station control room, but it's only the West Pavilion of the Museum of Science and Industry.

Okami, Odin Sphere, and Disgaea joining PS2 Greatest Hits?

"After so many reprints of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness I'm surprised it isn't already Greatest Hits game. In September it probably will be."

Announcing a new evolution blog: Evo.Sphere

Texas needs a blog where people can hold a rational discussion about the scientific basis for evolution, and efforts to remove the biology from biology class. And now it's got one. Introducing:

Photos: Hands-on with dual-format JVC Everio HD30 and HD40

Although there weren't that many big announcements in the camera and camcorder sphere at IFA 2008, we still grabbed the chance to catch up with recent debutantes. At the JVC stand, we got some hands-on time with the JVC Everio GZ-HD30 and GZ-HD40, two high-definition hybrid dual-format camcorders. They're solid, but not too chunky and felt light -- although this may be because the models shown off at IFA didn't have batteries -- they were powered from the mains, which is practical but also slightly misleading.

To the edge of a black hole

This close-up view here represents the immediate vicinity of the black hole, with the event horizon depicted as a black sphere. The surrounding disk of gas, represented by white and blue rings, whirls around the black hole. The white column over the pole of the black hole represents a jet of gas being ejected from the vicinity of the black hole at nearly the speed of light. NASA [View Larger Image]

Through the example of Georgia, Russia sends a clear message to the West that it will vigorously resist encroachment within what it regards as its sphere of influence.

Rosnanotekh Gets Branding Makeover

The Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies unveils a new brand image today. The Swedish agency Differ has replaced its double-headed eagle logo, traditional for Russian state companies, with a multicolored sphere and chopped off the last syllable of its name, making it Rosnano. At the corporation, they hope they will finally not be mistaken for Sergey Chemezov's Rostekhnologia (established from Rosoboronexport) any more. The new styling was approved by the corporation's supervisory board last week. Denis Kusenkov, head of the corporate communication department at Rosnano, said that the company would position itself as a major global brand for innovative technology.

Nanotechnologies secure limelight with start of dialogue on future regulations

When the Commission announced a public dialogue on nanotechnologies on 17 June 2008, it signalled its interests both in protecting Europe from unknown dangers that may be posed by these technologies and in maintaining Europe's position as a leader in this sphere. Hong Kong traders should anticipate future regulations based on a continuously expanding understanding of nanotechnology. At the same time, forward-looking traders will consider how increased research in nanotechnology may create opportunities outside the EU.

Russia wants Israel to become strategic nanotech partner

Russia believes that Israel could become a strategic partner in developing nanotechnology projects, the general director of the Russian Rosnanotech state corporation said on Thursday. "Israel is one of the global high-teach leaders, uniting a large number of inventers, innovative groups, working in the nanotechnology sphere," Leonid Melamed said during a visit to Israel. The main goal of the visit, which includes trips to educational, scientific and technical centers and meetings with Israeli officials, is to identify investment projects for Russia. "Considering that almost half of the people working in these laboratories speak Russian, Israel is clearly a strategic partner for us," Melamed added.
