Publishers don't enjoy used games; retailers like GameStop get to continually sell the same games over and over and pocket the profits, and the publisher only gets a cut of the first sale. It looked as if Nintendo was trying to limit the ability for gamers to sell its Wii Speak hardware by making the Wii Speak channel download-only and requiring a code... a code that would only work on one system. Now it looks like Nintendo may be backing off that plan.

tracheopterix writes "Oblong Industries, a startup based in LA has unveiled g-speak, an operational version of the notable interface from Minority Report. One of Oblong's founders served as science and technology adviser for the film; the interface was an extension of his doctoral work at the MIT Media Lab. Oblong calls g-speak a 'spatial operating environment' and adds that 'the SOE's combination of gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels brings the first major step in computer interface since 1984.'" The video shown on Oblong's front page is an impressive demo.

Ars discovered that the upcoming Nintendo Wii Speak peripheral—a microphone that finally lets you communicate to other Wii users online—comes with a 16 character code to download the "Wii Speak" channel. This is a one time use code, which cannot be replaced if lost. What does this mean to you? It means you can NEVER sell this thing, NEVER give it away or NEVER use it on another Wii Console than the one it was first downloaded on. We know game studios and publishers hate secondhand sales, because they don't get revenue from it, but this is HARDWARE. Nintendo's seriously going to limit what you can do with hardware you purchased? You go too far, sir. You go too far. [Ars Technica]

As reported earlier, the Wii Speak microphone comes with a code that will unlock the Wii Speak Channel, a requirement for voice-enabled games, social parties and Nintendo’s future Community plans.
