Soul Calibur IV hits the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with gorgeous new graphics, more detailed create-a-character options, and the same sword-clashing fights featured in the last four games. Speaking as a moderate fan of the series, I was hoping that Soul Calibur IV would reignite my passion for this well-respected fighter. What I got was more of the same, only prettier and more polished. Soul Calibur IV is undeniably the best version of an already great fighter, but outside of the Star Wars guest characters, there's little here that will surprise and delight newcomers or veterans.

Imprisoned Soul Reaper lieutenants Kira, Abarai and Hinamori collectively remember their days as Soul Reaper striplings, and separately come to the conclusion that escape is an attractive option. And escape they do, Abarai to train himself for the battle he knows is coming when Ichigo tries to save Rukia, Kira to rejoin his scheming captain Ichimaru, and Hinamori to avenge herself on the man she believes killed her beloved Captain Aizen, a quest that sends her crashing headfirst into a grudge match between her childhood friend Captain Hitsugaya and Ichimaru. With all of his comrades in one form of imprisonment or another, Ichigo is training to pull off bankai, the second release of his zanpaku-to, fully aware that he'll likely be alone against a host of Soul Reaper aces.

Soul Calibur IV, the latest instalment of Namco's weapon-heavy beat-'em-up franchise, arrives on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 looking jaw-droppingly pretty. Star Wars cast aside, what you have here is a solid fighting game. Usually all a fighting game needs to be good is you, a friend, a couch, and some time to kill. Soul Calibur makes it so you don't even have to have your friend physically sitting in the same room as you. All you need is the couch and time to kill. Fans of the series will like this game quite a bit, and newcomers can even be brought in by it. Even new players can be taken in by this game, or perhaps a player who hasn't played any of the recent games of the series. All in all I'd say check this one out, the gameplay can be fun for hours on end, and online adds even more time to that.

"What if an army of large-breasted female warriors, Darth Vader, and Yoda still weren't enough to satisfy your most illicit fanboy fantasies? Mathematically speaking, that puts you in a very small percentile but, never one to back down from a challenge, Namco has included a character creation tool in Soul Calibur IV to fill in whatever gaps you may feel are inexcusable.

UGO writes: "We all love Soul Calibur IV. The huge cast of characters combined with the series' signature weapons-based fighting has kept us glued to our consoles for hours on end--I still have it sitting in my disc tray at home. But the real hook of this latest installment has to be the character creator that was introduced in Soul Calibur III. With just a little creativity, fans have churned out custom characters that draw their inspiration from across the spectrum of media. Comics, movies, celebrities, other games... if you can think of someone that you want to fight as (or against), chances are you can put together some resemblance of them with the toolset the developers provided.

For a band that makes such edgy, experimental music, TV on the Radio is almost quaint when it comes to its business strategy. "We haven't put our music in ads so far, and we have a clause in our contract that states our songs won't be associated with cigarettes, alcohol brands or the military," singer Tunde Adebimpe says. "We don't want to see corporate banners at our shows, either. I want the live experience to remain unmarred."
