Open Source Software Shows Its Muscle (Law.com)

Open source software had its origins in the free software movement. By now, most open source users understand that free refers to freedom, not to price. The new lesson is that the freedom belongs to the software, not to users. You are not free to do whatever you want with the open source software and may find yourself in a legal fight if what you do restricts the freedom of the software. Many of the things that for-profit companies strive for end up limiting some software's freedom. Any activity that leverages software for business advantage is likely to restrict the software's freedom, and the growing use of open source software by for-profit companies has been a growing irritant for free software advocates.

Benchmarking Hardware RAID vs. Linux Kernel Software RAID

"The main surprise in the first set of tests, on RAID-5 performance, is that block input is substantially better for software RAID; ext3 got 385MB/sec in software against 330MB/sec in hardware. The hardware dominates in block output, getting 322MB/sec aginst the 174MB/sec achieved by software for aligned XFS, making for a 185% speed increase for hardware over software. These differences in block output are not as large when using the ext3 filesystem. Block rewrite is almost identical for ext3 in software and hardware, whereas the rewrite difference becomes 128MB/sec to 109MB/sec for hardware to software respectively when using XFS."

Study Says Open Source Software a Security Risk

chareverie writes "Fortify Software released a study where they concluded that open source software poses a large security risk to corporations who have implemented it. They reason this by stating that the fault lies within the open source communities and their failure to adhere to minimum security practices. Fortify Software studied 11 open source software packages, where the application server Tomcat was determined to be the best. The other 10 were found to have poor results, with those being Derby, Geronimo, Hibernate, Hipergate, JBoss, Jonas, OFBiz, OpenCMS, Resin and Struts. Jacob West, manager of Fortify's research group, reminds that purpose of the study was 'not to condemn open source software, but rather to point out that the security practices need to improve because open source adoption by enterprises and governments is growing

When it comes to protecting an organization against email viruses, most companies take a two step approach. The first step involves running antivirus software directly on the email server. This software monitors inbound and outbound email and screens each message for viruses. The second part to a typical email antivirus strategy involves running antivirus software on each client machine. This software monitors the workstation's file system, but also integrates into Microsoft Outlook.
