Smartphone sales growth slowed in Q3 - Gartner

HELSINKI, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Growth in the global smartphone market slowed to 11.5 percent in the third quarter year on year, the slowest rate of growth since it started tracking smartphone sales, research firm Gartner said on Thursday. Some 36.5 million smartphones, or handsets with computer-like features such as email, were sold globally in the July-September quarter, Gartner said in a statement. All vendors are after a bigger slice of the smartphone market, which is set to continue growing next year, but at an even slower rate than in the last quarter, while the wider handset market has a gloomy outlook, Gartner said. What Makes a Smartphone a Smartphone?

We have a large variety of devices out there now. With Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm, Nokia, the Iphone, and Google's G1, many would call these smartphones. But as I look around the web I've read that some say devices like the G1 or iphone are not smartphones. Some say they are multimedia phones. When I compare my Dash and my Iphone, there are definitely some differences but there are also many similarities. They both play music, videos, handle all my appointments, contacts, ebooks, bible, internet, email, camera, and so on. So what do you all think? Are all the devices mentioned smartphones? Are some smartphones and some not? Does it matter if the device has a touch screen or not? And of course the real question: What makes a smartphone a smartphone

Verizon: Smartphone Users Forced Into Buying Mobile Data

It looks like if you're buying a smartphone from Verizon Wireless on or after November 14, 2008, you will be forced into buying a data plan of $29.99 or higher. According to Engadget Mobile, there is confirmation in a Verizon Wireless document that says that Pay As You Go, 10 MB data plans, and 1X Block won't be available to smartphone users when the new data policy takes place. Now, if you want a smartphone for PIM management features only, you may find yourself adding wireless data features that you may have not considered previously.

iPhone clouds true Smartphone snapshot

The iPhone - now ranked the second most popular smartphone - saw strong enough adoption in the quarter ending Sept. 30 to mask the sluggishness of the overall smartphone market this past summer, according to a report by Needham & Co. research analyst Charlie Wolf. The iPhone now accounts for 16.6 percent of the smartphone market share, second to Nokia globally and RIM in the U.S. And while the iPhone’s growth of 28.6 percent was relatively flat, it was considered strong enough to generate some excitement in smartphones. From Wolf’s report:

IPhone Grabs 16.6% of Global Smartphone Market

"If you ask the average person to name a smartphone, many of them will blurt out iPhone. Since the iPhone 3G launched the mobile device has become one of the most popular phones around. New data was announced this week that shows the iPhone now holds 16.6% of the entire global smartphone market for the quarter ending in September. The top smartphone brand globally is Nokia with 43.6% of the market."
