Panasonic’s DMC-G1 is an SLR camera with all the comforts of home — a crisp viewfinder and an interchangeable lens system. It differs from a traditional digital or film SLR, though, in that it is significantly smaller and lighter without compromising the quality of the in-built image sensor. The G1 offers all the traditional manual controls of an SLR, with manual zoom and focus rings on the interchangeable lenses. The G1’s feature set includes Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto picture system, to ensure photos are easy to capture at any time. A broad range of custom picture modes and settings are also easy to access. Two lenses will be initially offered with the G1. A short 14-45mm lens has a minimum aperture range of f3.5 to f5.6, while the telephoto 45-200 will have a range of f4 to f5.

Nikon D3X with 24-70/2.8 AF-S lens. The digital SLR wars continue to heat up. This year Nikon pulled a major coup d'etat on Canon with the release of the full-frame, ISO 25,600-equivalent D3, and its DX-format cousin, the D300. Those cameras, though, clocked in at a "mere" 12 megapixels. Nikon has aimed squarely for Canon's flagship EOS 1-Ds Mark III with its newly announced D3X SLR.

The Olympus digital SLR lineup has been missing a midrange offering to suit folks who want a bit more camera than the $649.99 (with 14-42mm kit lens) E-520 and don’t need the pro-level features of the $1,699 (body-only) E-3. The newly announced Olympus E-300 drops right in between the two, with an estimated street price of $1,299 (body-only) when it ships in January 2009. This places the 12.3-megapixel shooter in direct competition with the recently released 15.1-megapixel Canon 50D ($1,399, body-only) and 12.3-megapixel Nikon D90 ($995.99, body-only).

As the successor to the popular D80, Nikon's new D90 digital SLR has a lot to live up to. It has a unique selling point though; it is the world's first DSLR to include video capability, and in high definition too. With a 12.3MP CMOS sensor, 11-point Multi-CAM 1000 AF system and of course live monitor view, the D90 looks like a very complete package.

The Samsung DX20 is a new digital SLR from ... wait, Samsung? Actually, this camera is a collaboration between Samsung and Pentax, and it accepts Pentax lenses -- so if you've got a lot of those, it's definitely worth taking a look at. Unfortunately it had some problems with dynamic range and image stabilization, keeping us from recommending it solidly. Danny Dumas and Jon Snyder review the phone in the first half of this week's video podcast.

Nikon D3X If I had to assume something, I would assume that Sony has their sensor inside the Nikon D3X 24.5 megapixel D-SLR camera for the professional. The D3X can shoot up to five frames-per-second (fps), and 14-bit files that are 138MB when processed. The exclusive Scene Recognition System from Nikon is a feature in the D3X. This feature further refines the auto exposure, auto white balance and autofocus calculations. The D3X also features the exclusive Multi-CAM 3500FX focus module. This module has 51 auto focus (AF) points. Nikon ensures their "over-delivery" on what this camera is capable of producing, and I would encourage Canon to pay attention, Nikon is on your heels.
