MINNEAPOLIS (Business Wire) -- For many people Thanksgiving Day is a time to rest, relax, maybe even nap. For others, the Thanksgiving meal is simply an appetizer on the way to the main event: Black Friday shopping. Whether they're on a hunt for doorbusters, trying to get a jump on their holiday gift lists, or they simply enjoy kicking off the holiday season camping out in a parking lot with friends and family, Black Friday shoppers know that shopping on the morning after Thanksgiving has an aura all its own.

If you read the angry comments we get from self-proclaimed "inventors" whenever we write about patents around here, you might get the impression from them that if you can't protect your ideas, there's simply no reason to be an inventor. It looks like Johnny Chung Lee is proving that's simply not true. Lee has made plenty of cool things, some of which have garnered plenty of attention: from his Poor Man's Steadycam to his Wii-based interactive whiteboard. But none of his inventions have garnered as much attention as his YouTube video of his headtracking virtual reality system for the Wii, which became a YouTube sensation:

Ubuntu Kitten writes "Since October the community-generated database of cards known to work with Ndiswrapper has been down. This is apparently due to an on-going site redesign, but right now the usual URL simply directs to a stock Sourceforge page. Without the database, the software's usability is severely diminished but this raises an interesting question: Is an open source project obliged to provide support for its users? If so, for how long should the support last? Web servers cost money, especially for popular sites. While developers can sometimes find sponsorship, is it possible to get sponsorship simply for infrastructure and user services?"

I've written previously about how pragmatism is trumping ideology throughout open source. Not everyone considers this a good thing. But it's the reality of a development model and licensing approach that's gone mainstream, depends in no small part on corporate patronage, and is now widely viewed as simply an efficient approach to developing many types of software. What's struck me recently, however, is not just a cooling of some of the passion around open source as a social movement or alternative to commercial software. Rather, it's what feels like a general and widespread acceptance that business models built around pure play open source simply don't work for the most part.

It appears that rumors that AT&T is developing a tethering plan for the iPhone are true, with AT&T consumer products boss Ralph de la Vega confirming that users will be able to use the sassy Apple phone as a modem "soon." No additional information was provided, and of course the big question will be just how much you'll have to pay for the honor. AT&T offers tethering on a select few smart phones, including some RIM Blackberry phones, for roughly $60 a month -- which includes unlimited data consumption. Recently an AT&T insider stated that AT&T was being "paranoid" about legal issues and network strain resulting from iPhones suddenly becoming HSDPA modems.

teams simply can't stop the crop of new mobile devices sprouting up in their environments. From Symbian to BlackBerry, more than 32 million smartphones were sold worldwide in the first quarter of 2008, up 30 percent over last year, according to Gartner. Apple's iPhone is forcing many organizations to rethink how they deal with employee-owned devices. To not just survive but thrive in the age of workforce mobility, enterprises must develop more creative strategies for enabling business use of smartphones and PDAs, including those that cannot be fully managed and secured.

Look, there is simply no way e-books will ever replace traditional books, printed on paper and bound in cloth. There is something more durable about a real book. Sure, you can burn them, pulp them, and rip them to little pieces. Time and nature yellow and molder pages. Ink fades. But print is substantial in a way that pixels are not.
