Mirroring a similar update for the fourth-generation Nano, Apple has issued a v2.0.1 firmware update for the 120GB iPod classic. The change list is in fact similar to that for the Nano, primarily introducing support for Apple's in-ear headphones equipped with a mic and remote. Also corrected is a bug in saving Genius playlists, and an unspecified number of minor problems. The update is presently available only through iTunes, and is incompatible with 80 or 160GB Classics.

I've been thinking about design and how it impacts popularity. For example, does a website become popular because it's design is similar to other popular sites? I agree with the idea that ease of navigation will impact whether a site will be popular. But does the rest of the design matter? Yes, design matters - I'm not saying that. But one thing I've noticed recently is that many of the more popular websites seem to be very similar in design. Yes, that design is clean and clear and bright (many would call it Web 2.0), but how much of that is because that design is what works best on the Web and how much is because of fads in design. I was reading an article on You the Designer that was addressing the theory (proposed by an article on the New York Times) that Hulu will win over YouTube because it has a better design.

I was reading this article on c|net the other day Flash, HTML, Ajax: Which will win the Web app war? and it got me thinking. In some ways DHTML and Ajax are the same thing, or at least very similar, so the war is really between Ajax and Flash. Ironically, a lot of the issues people have with Flash pages are similar to issues found on Ajax pages. Ajax tends to seem to load faster, but poorly written Ajax applications can be confusing and hard to use, just like poorly written Flash pages. I wonder if if 2-3 years Ajax will be as annoying to some people as Flash is now. What do you think? If you had to choose one or the other for a Web application, which would you choose: Ajax or Flash?

Hewlett-Packard raised $2 billion in the debt market to help fund its $13.2 billion purchase of Electronic Data Systems, adding to record corporate bond offerings by technology companies this year. HP paid a yield of 4.6 percentage points over Treasuries of similar maturity to issue 6.125 percent notes due in March 2014, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That's a premium of about 1.2 percentage points more than where similar Hewlett-Packard debt traded Monday. Sales of bonds by technology borrowers have surged 45 percent this year to the most ever and are equal to almost four times the 2006 tally, Bloomberg data show. That compares with a 30 percent decline for all U.S. corporate debt. HP, IBM and Microsoft are turning to the bond market even as spreads widen to records.

December 1, 2008 (Dallas, TX.) - According to a new report from TDG, a leading voice regarding the diffusion of broadband video, game consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3 are evolving into multimedia gateways with legitimate non-gaming media arsenals. Armed with the growing video libraries of Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Network, these consoles can deliver on-demand video services with content similar to local cable or satellite TV operators. Though similar efforts have failed (largely because they relied on consumers to buy yet another set-top box), the model and the timing seem to favor the console-based approach.
