Silverlight 2 RC0 and accompanying tools released for developers

Silverlight 2 Beta 1 arrived in March, laying the foundation for a massive update to Silverlight 1. Silverlight 2 Beta 2 was then released in June, and while many expected the final version late this summer, Microsoft instead sent out a slightly newer build in July. The official response for the arrival of the final version of Silverlight 2 was "when it's ready," and that time seems to be soon, but no one knows how soon. According to Silverlight's homepage,

Introducing an RIA Benchmark for Flex, Silverlight, HTML and More: GUIMark

I have recently released a new benchmark called GUIMark. GUIMark is kinda like an Acid3 test that’s geared towards RIA technologies. The goal was to figure out how to implement a reference design in different runtimes and then benchmark how smoothly that design could be animated. So far I have implementations in DHTML, Flex, Java, Silverlight 1 and Silverlight 2.

Why Did Javascript/AJAX Mop the Floor With Java, Flash and Silverlight?

"".NET is Microsoft’s answer to Java: it compiles things into bytecode, it’s multi-platform, etc. Technically, many argue that it’s “Java as it should have been”. .NET isn’t free: while the virtual machine and the language itself are ECMA standards, Microsoft’s GUI libraries and other key components aren’t. This means (surprise surprise) that you can’t write a .NET program for Microsoft Windows, and run it under GNU/Linux, even though there is a .NET virtual machine for GNU/Linux (called “Mono”). If .NET is Microsoft’s answer to Java, Silverlight is Microsoft’s answer to Flash. Silverlight allows you to run .NET applications within your browser

Silverlight Flickr Client Written in IronRuby

Just read about the Silverlight Flickr client (see above) that Microsoft’s Jimmy Schementi build for a talk to .NET developers there. The interesting thing is that he used IronRuby (his language of choice) instead of the C# or VB that we normally associate with the .NET Framework.

Google's DoubleClick technology now can be used to deliver video advertising shown with Microsoft's Silverlight technology, and it will be used for that purpose with the Olympics video that NBC Universal plans to show online using a player based on Silverlight 2.

Miguel De Icaza On Mono, Moonlight, and Gnome

Knuckles writes "Austrian newspaper Der Standard continues its recent series of in-depth interviews with free software developers. This time they sat down with Novell's Vice President of Developer Platform, Miguel de Icaza of Gnome and Mono fame. The interview was conducted at GUADEC (GNOME Users' And Developers' European Conference). Miguel talks mainly about Mono 2.0 and .Net 3.5 compatibility, enhancing the collaboration with Microsoft over Silverlight ("Moonlight" in Mono), and the larger political situation of Mono and Moonlight. When the interviewer asks whether Moonlight is only validating Silverlight on the web, Miguel gives a quite detailed answer that includes a possibly well-deserved swipe at Mozilla..."

Getting Started with Silverlight

Despite all the wonderful things you can say about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, I think most people doing a lot of web-based development would agree that they form a pretty poor environment for developing modern sites and applications. If you care about your content working on most web browsers (or even just Internet Explorer and Firefox), accommodating their differences can be maddening. Many techniques and JavaScript libraries have been developed and shared over the years that can reduce this frustration, but none of them are silver bullets.
