Nik Software has announced the new Silver Efex Pro photographic plug-in for use with Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture. It is said to be the most advanced, complete, and straightforward black-and-white solution. Silver Efex Pro uses a range of advanced imaging algorithms that protect against unwanted artifacts, a comprehensive collection of 18 emulated black-and-white film types, and a state-of-the-art grain engine that truly mimics the silver halide process and creates the highest quality black-and-white images possible from scanned or digital color photographs.

Editor's Note: We recently saw a demo of the new Silver Efex Pro plug-in from Nik Software and left thinking -- why aren't there more professional B&W conversion plug-ins out there like this one? While there are some pretty decent B&W tools in Photoshop itself, we really liked what we saw from Silver Efex Pro, especially that it didn't sacrifice ease-of-use for control. Indeed, Nik's very helpful "U Point" technology is once again used in Silver Efex Pro, giving you many ways to selectively tweak tone and contrast in your images during B&W conversion.

The state of the assets of bankrupt Silver State Helicopters is providing clues about how the troubled company was run before its shutdown and Chapter 7 (liquidation) bankruptcy filing in February. At the time of its closing, Silver State was the largest civilian helicopter school in the U.S., with 2,400 students and more than 700 employees distributed among 33 locations. Former employees and students have charged the school and Silver State-approved student loan originators with various financial improprieties, and several states attorneys general are investigating the circumstances surrounding the bankruptcy.

Although CNET did not review the 40-inch Sony KDL-40Z4100/S (silver), we did review the 46-inch Sony KDL-46Z4100/S (silver). Judging from their spec sheets the two Sony front-panel LCDs are basically identical but for screen size, so we expect the review of the 46-inch model to give a good indication of how the 40-inch model will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Sony KDL-46Z4100/S (silver).
