Shoppers grow beyond books and movies to buy more categories online

Pricey, highly considered purchases such as home appliances represent some of the least-penetrated online sales categories, but that’s poised to change in the future, according to a new report from Forrester Research Inc. As the longest-tenured web shoppers grow more comfortable online, they’re moving into spending on a broader range of categories, according to “How Shoppers Evolve Online,” by Forrester principal analyst Sucharita Mulpuru.

A recent survey commissioned by PayPal revealed that seventy percent of online shoppers intend to spend less this season, mostly by purchasing fewer and less expensive gifts, limiting spending on parties and decorations, and staying home instead of traveling. But PayPal's 2008 Holiday Survey conducted by Ipsos also revealed that nearly three quarters (73 percent) of online shoppers intend to give to charity this season, compared to 60 percent in 2007.

A secure checkout, product quality and an easy-to-use web site were rated as key factors in attracting online shoppers to a web site, according to a new survey by Harris Interactive on behalf of Volusion Inc., an e-commerce systems provider. Web shoppers will shop a bit more online, but less at stores, studies show

Online consumers plan to spend slightly more online this holiday season, even as they cut back on purchases in stores, according to a survey of 10,000 online shoppers by The Conference Board, a business research organization and TNS a market research and retail consulting firm.

Report: Online shoppers cutting back this holiday season

The holiday shopping season may be a little less of a consumer orgy this year and more of a consumer makeout session thanks to the faltering economy, according to a new report from PriceGrabber. The site, which provides price comparisons to help shoppers score the best deal on products, also performs regular surveys of its users to get an idea of current and future spending habits. Most recently, it found that the online holiday shopping forecast is looking a little grim for retailers that typically count on booming sales; most consumers plan to cut back and save money this season.
