When a first person shooter bungles moving and shooting, what does that leave room for? Great reloading? A potent save system? Awesome menus? Legendary is not a good game nor is it a so-bad-it's-good one. Its premise is sound enough: let loose a myriad of mythical brutes into our modern-day world and throw in a diabolical tyrant intent on ruling the earth. You at least have potential for a fun camp classic in the Clash of the Titans mold, but instead of delivering anachronistic thrills, Legendary piles poor gameplay mechanics onto overused shooter cliches, drying up all the juicy possibilities and leaving a dull, lifeless husk in their wake.

Chalk this up in the 'who would have ever thought' category, but the developers of Blast Factor have decided to add in trophies for their TWO YEAR OLD GAME. While Blast Factor was a fun title to play at the time, much of that had to do with the whole complete lack of PSN and PS3 games during that time frame. Its unique shooter gameplay still gives it some legs, but compared to games like Everyday Shooter and Super Stardust HD it seems a little... first-gen.

Ripten: "Since LittleBigPlanet hit retails shelves a week ago (though many people got it before then), there have been some pretty nifty levels coming out of the gaming populous. However, none of them so far have been as creative and mind-blowingly awesome as this Gradius level. Check it out after the break."

The shooter is a broad church. BioShock and Half-Life 2 may have wowed with literary smarts and engaging characters, but there will always be games to remind us that the cost of admission is just the possession of a gun and something to point it at. But, as Legendary warns, if the very pinnacle of your ambition is to make a game in which you shoot griffons in the face, you had better ensure that this basic action is soundly implemented.

The much-anticipated first person non-shooter Mirror's Edge is being released today for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Reviews for the game, while not without complaints, are generally positive. 1Up praises the controls, saying, "It gets things very right very early, distilling its first-person platformer ambitions into a very manageable control scheme. ... Once you're familiar with Faith's abilities and their limitations — imparted through a much-needed tutorial — it's easy to see potential routes through the world." Ars Technica is more critical, noting that the main story's gameplay only clocks in at about six hours, and that the artistic style doesn't vary much between levels. Nick Channon, a producer for Mirror's Edge, sat down with Gamasutra and discussed the reasoning for some of their design choices.
