pasokon writes "ZDNet reports on an Android bug in T-Mobile G1s with early versions of the firmware: 'When the phone booted it started up a command shell as root and sent every keystroke you ever typed on the keyboard from then on to that shell. Thus every word you typed, in addition to going to the foreground application would be silently and invisibly interpreted as a command and executed with superuser privileges. ... open the keyboard tray on your G1, ignore anything you see on the screen, and type these 8 keystrokes: (enter)-r-e-b-o-o-t-(enter). Poof, your phone will reboot.'"

T-Mobile has issued an over-the-air fix for a laughable Android security bug that caused anything typed into its G1 phone to be interpreted by a root shell process. Prior to the fix, hackers briefly enjoyed root shell access, leading to such fun as Debian installations on SD cards.

The hack that allows you get ‘root’ on your G1 phone (reported here last week) is just the tip of a rather unpleasant iceberg. The hack relies on a bug in the OS - or rather, in the OS as implemented by HTC - which leaves an invisible command shell running on the phone. A shell is a bit like a DOS command line in Windows, if you aren’t up your UNIX-isms.

"NOTE: We've attached the pagerank.c code at the end of this post, after our bash script. We've also compiled it, and put it up for download on a separate server, for Cygwin kernel 1.5.25 and Ubuntu kernel 2.6.24-21 (Right click on either link and choose "Save As," since neither file has an extension, but both are binaries :) If you would like the binary compiled for your particular distro, send us an email (top right link) and we'll help you if it's possible :) If you prefer to build the binary from the attached source for yourself, you can do that with gcc (or your compiler of choice) very simply, as it requires no "special" arguments (just the c code file and an output file name), like so:"

Many people use SSH to log in to remote machines, copy files around, and perform general system administration. If you want to increase your productivity with SSH, you can try a tool that lets you run commands on more than one remote machine at the same time. Parallel ssh, Cluster SSH, and ClusterIt let you specify commands in a single terminal window and send them to a collection of remote machines where they can be executed.
