Several years after rival newspapers started theirs, The Independent today finally launched its first serious weblogs initiative, coming pretty much as a joint project with Russian-owned community site LiveJournal. Their new âIndependent Mindsâ site hosts several new correspondentsâ blogs on livejournal.com but, like MyTelegraph before it, encourages readers to sign up to write their own journals. Both aspects are a darned sight slicker than Independent.co.ukâs previous, limited blog effort.

This morning, Deutsche Bank cut ratings on several solar stocks, including First Solar (FSLR: View sentiment for FSLRsentiment, chart, options) , to "hold" from "buy." The reasons are familiar to those that follow solar firms - the rising cost of capital, reduced access to capital, declining fossil fuel costs, a worsening macro environment in 2009, the recent strength of the dollar versus the euro, and significant module-price declines in 2009, amongst others. The brokerage stated, "While there were arguably better spots to step out of solar PV company stocks earlier in the fall, several factors ... have helped spur appreciation in some names off of recent lows."

A stay has been granted until December 12th by a Kentucky appeals court as the battle over the attempted seizure of Internet domain names associated with various forms of online gambling continues. The motion to stay was filed by the Interactive Media Entertianment & Gaming Association (iMEGA), one of several interested parties that was denied legal standing in the original Franklin County circuit court decision. The decision entered by a three-judge appeals panel prohibits last month's court-ordered seizure of 141 domains, and also combined several motions related to the case into a single hearing scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on December 12th.

For some years Iâve been backing up my various Linux-based servers, websites etc using a custom script which makes incremental tar-based backups of key directory hierarchies, dumps some MySQL databases, and then copies the lot to a remote machine using scp or rsync. We run this each night using cron. Itâs worked well, but itâs becoming rather spaghetti-like since we run some version of it on several machines, copying stuff to several other machines. And the process of pruning old backups to keep disk usage under control at both the sources and the destinations is somewhat haphazard.

GPL blamed mechanical failure for the blackouts in Demerara and Berbice, supported by Prime Minister Sam Hinds who is always easy to convince of anything. We have to ask some questions. Are there machines in Berbice that were down long before this crisis? Why didnât they repair them? Is there a machine at Onverwagt that was out for several months and only now they have ordered parts to bring it back into operation?  Did they overhaul the big machine at Canefield in a way which its makers or any self-respecting technical man would not regard as an overhaul? I am talking about replacing major parts on selected days and the machine going back into operation after every replacement. If this went on over several months before finishing then no wonder the machine never performed like an overhauled engine and it is now limping.

THE headline âXmas should be brightâ on the November 1 edition of the Stabroek News was indeed a deceiving one. âGPL assures no planned power outages for Christmasâ was on the Guyana Chronicle the same day while âDark Christmas avertedâ was on the Kaieteur News on November 1. It was no accident these headlines graced the dailies that day, which is, for many, the first âunofficialâ day of the Christmas season. Little did we know that the headlines were misleading as can be. Several blackouts graced several areas in Berbice that same day. The trend continued into this past week with numerous power outages on various days and during the nights.
