Sony patents sound-sensing PS3 controller

A recent Sony PS3 patent filing has revived rumors that the company is quietly preparing to attack Nintendo's motion-sensing Wii head-on.

Sony patents new motion-sensing tech

At the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata debuted the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to much fanfare and intrigue. Not a year later, former Sony execs Ken Kutaragi and Phil Harrison used Sony's E3 2006 stage to reveal the game maker's own motion-sensing controller, later dubbed the Sixaxis. However, rather than the universal interest that greeted its contemporary, Sony's device quickly drew fire as an "us too" peripheral that was as much of a surprise to the development community as it was to gamers.

Mobile Phones, Video Game Controllers, Medical Devices, Industrial Sensing Driving MEMS Industry

PITTSBURGH, PA, Dec 02 (MARKET WIRE) -- According to Roger Meike, director of Sun Microsystems Labs' Project Sun SPOT, "the next cool thing" could combine MEMS accelerometers, light and temperature sensors in new classes of applications that interact with the real world. Should the next generation of inventors use the Java-based Project Sun SPOT (Small Programmable Object Technology) to build those devices, so much the better, said Meike to attendees of MEMS Executive Congress(R), held November 5-7 in Monterey, CA. Noting Yole Developpement's MEMS market projections for 2012, director of Nokia Research Center's Cambridge, UK laboratory, Dr. Tapani Ryhaenen, asked whether surging demand for mobile devices is largely responsible for projected growth in accelerometers, radio frequency (RF) MEMS and silicon microphones.

Nanotubes Deemed Different From Carbon

Sensing confusion among the nanotech industry, the Environmental Protection Agency has clarified its position on carbon nanotubes, saying they are chemically distinct from graphite and other forms of carbon. The move serves as a reminder that carbon nanotubes are considered new substances under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

2028: Little green robots to the rescue

From environmental sensing networks across the globe to personal processors in our clothes that detect nutrition and hydration deficiencies, the buzzword is no longer "embedded intelligence" but "embedded inter-operation."

Sony evolves high definition FCB range with day/night functionality

Sony's Image Sensing Solutions division has announced the launch of its second high definition FCB camera module. The new FCB-H11 builds on the success of 2007's FCB-H10, bringing several new features to the renowned performance. This includes an ability to work in low light conditions through the addition of an auto ICR (IR Cut Filter Removable), which enables a day/night function and operation at an industry leading 1lx for true high definition resolution. This new functionality will give Sony access to a broader application base.

For an excellent, thorough discussion of what capacitive sensing is, how it works, and how to make it work as well as possible in your application, I would suggest a visit to Lion Precision's online capacitive sensor tutorial. You'll find information on what capacitance is and how it's measured; how targets affect your measurements (and how to make that work in your favor); and how to maximize accuracy as well as definitions of sensitivity, various types of errors, bandwidth, and resolution.

Sony reveals smart cameras at Vision 2008

The four camera modules, launched by Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions (ISS) division, process image data before transmitting to a PC and combine a powerful CPU with an open FPGA, delivering a threefold performance improvement over the previous generation.

Sony PS3 motion-control patent detailed

It seems like those rumours that a Wii-like PS3 motion-sensing controller that breaks apart were on the money, if a recent SCEA patent is anything to go by.
