Sega Japan Passing On PS2 Sonic Unleashed

In North America and Europe Sonic Unleashed is exploding on every viable console on the market with a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 version that Japan isn't getting. Sega of Japan plans to release Sonic: World Adventure (renamed to better fit Sonic's journey around the Earth and downplay the Werehog thing?) only on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The PlayStation 2 port will be completed before Sonic: World Adventure launches in Japan so this begs the question why is Sega passing on it? It's not like Sega Japan is abandoning the PlayStation 2 entirely. Thunderforce VI comes out on Thursday in Japan and unless Sega has anything secretly planned it will be the final PlayStation 2 game published by Sega in the region.

Sega Announces Mega Drive Collection

Sega is a very popular company, having gained a lot of fans in the 1990s when it was one of the biggest developers and publishers of games for the consoles of the time, like the SNES or PlayStation 1. Although not a lot has been heard about the company these days, it still manages to release quite a few titles that are sure to have some very decent sales, like Football Manager.

Sega Genesis turns 20

The Sega Genesis turns 20 this week, and that's as good an excuse as any by me to remember its great moments (and I suppose, to fire up the Virtual Console, hey?). The system launched in 1988, after the NES but before the SNES, and also after the TurboGrafx-16. Much as the story went with the Dreamcast and the PlayStation 2, Nintendo more or less beat out the system eventually with the massively popular Super Nintendo Entertainment System (with a name like that, who could compete!). Nevertheless, the Genesis did stand its ground, being the company's most successful system, and has a library to be proud of. Maybe it's not as expansive as the SNES catalogue, but it's arguably as memorable. So with that, here are the gems that I find really shine -- feel free to add your own images (keep 'em small) and stories from the Genesis' heyday!

It's official -- SEGA to publish The Conduit

SEGA has confirmed via press release that they have indeed picked up the title and that it will be released in Spring 2009.

Sega's Disco Karaoke Machine Twirls Its Disco Ball, Connects to Cellphones

Two things set this Sega Hitokara karaoke machine apart from the rest: it's connected to a cloud-based database of 43,000 songs via cellphone and it's got a whirling, light-up mirrored disco ball. Ohboyyes. Granted you'd have to be a fan of both karaoke (you strange person) and cheezy disco lighting, but what the heck—it's a neat gizmo, with built-in mic and speakers. But it only connects to special karaoke-enabled mobiles in Japan, so you'll probably not see one. Japanese disco karaoke fans can get them from December for the equivalent of around $75 though. SEEBURGER Technology Proves Profitable for SEGA

SEGA of America needed to comply with Wal-Mart customer mandates, streamline its order process and create greater visibility into inventory. Uploading new orders via modem to its 10-year old B2B/EDI system took hours.
