The advantage of using two eyes to see the world around us has long been associated solely with our capacity to see in 3-D. Now, a new study from a scientist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has uncovered a truly eye-opening advantage to binocular vision: our ability to see through things.

"How many of Jupiter's four bright Galilean moons do you see? You can tell which ones are moons because the moons are all lined up. If you don't see any, try resting the binoculars on a fence or other solid support. A tripod mount is even better, if you have one. Now go back to KStars, center on Jupiter and zoom way in. Which moons did you see?"

I was reading a blog on Appcellerant today and they were talking about learning HTML by viewing the source code. When I started building Web pages, that was, in effect, the only way to learn it. You would see a page that did something really neat and you'd think "wow, I want to do that" and no sooner had you thought it than you were right-clicking and viewing the source. I still do that all the time even now, in an age of Flash and challenging JavaScript or PHP backend sites. In fact, viewing the source is a great way to see how I do my HTML/CSS templates. While I include all the code for download, you can view the source of the sample pages and see it all in action.

Thatâs the claim coming from NBC Universal, given the success of its anti-piracy efforts during the Beijing Olympics. NBCU general counsel Rick Cotton says that less than 1% of all Olympic video viewed online in the US during the games was unauthorized. âIt went exceedingly well. It was a great, great success,â says Cotton. Donât believe him? Go search on âOlympicsâ in YouTube. Youâll see âSumo Olympicsâ and other funny fare from past games, but little in the way of raw Olympics footage. The system wasn’t totally foolproof, but it took some real doing to see content NBC didn’t want you to see.

Last week, we posted the image above as part of our "Where In The Universe" challenge, where we test our readers' visual knowledge of our universe. This incredible and unusual Hubble image of object N44F, known as the "Celestial Geode" is a gas cavity carved by the stellar wind and intense ultraviolet radiation from a hot young star. Readers were fascinated by the object and wanted to know more. One of our regular readers, Jorge, asked this question about N44F: "Why is it that we see the back "wall" of the bubble, we see the side walls, but we don't see the front wall?" I wasn't able to answer that question, so I sought out one of the astronomers responsible for this image, Dr. You-Hua Chu, professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

The Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) has done its duty – it even went above and beyond its expected capabilities. But the end is nigh, and soon, on September 29 the ATV will become a fireball and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere, never to be seen again. But before it does, people in North America and Europe have the perfect opportunity to see it sail overhead this weekend in its low Earth orbit, and according to Spaceweather.com, the ATV will glow about a brightly as the North Star, Polaris. To find out when and where to look for the ATV in the evening or early morning skies, check out Spaceweather.com's great satellite tracking webpage. Just plug in your zip code and you'll be able to get tracking information for all the satellites that will be visible for the next few days.

An anonymous reader writes "Think it's impossible to see four-dimensional objects? These videos will show you otherwise. Some mathematicians work with four-dimensional objects all the time, and they've developed some clever tricks to get a feeling for what they're like. The techniques begin by imagining how two-dimensional creatures, like those in Edwin Abbot's 'Flatland,' could get a feeling for three-dimensional objects. When those techniques are transferred up a dimension, the results are gorgeous."

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software (think Doom and Quake), accuses PC hardware manufacturers of implicitly supporting piracy of all kinds because they see it as a "hidden benefit" when you buy a PC. This came up in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, and was part of a larger point aimed at answering the question of why PC manufacturers aren't doing more to stop piracy with hardware measures. When asked if these companies are secretly happy about piracy, Todd says:

holy_calamity writes "New Scientist reports on a neat DARPA idea that uses the shimmer of heat haze to allow binoculars to see further. It works by exploiting the fact that some distortions from heat haze actually magnify objects behind them. The binoculars collect a series of frames when that is occurring to boost magnification by 3 times. The design goal is to be able to present one image a second, and to enable facial recognition at 90% accuracy at a distance of 1 km. The scopes could be on the battlefield inside of 3 years."

For me, no. I'm sticking with Firefox 3 for now.
