Benchmarking Hardware RAID vs. Linux Kernel Software RAID

"The main surprise in the first set of tests, on RAID-5 performance, is that block input is substantially better for software RAID; ext3 got 385MB/sec in software against 330MB/sec in hardware. The hardware dominates in block output, getting 322MB/sec aginst the 174MB/sec achieved by software for aligned XFS, making for a 185% speed increase for hardware over software. These differences in block output are not as large when using the ext3 filesystem. Block rewrite is almost identical for ext3 in software and hardware, whereas the rewrite difference becomes 128MB/sec to 109MB/sec for hardware to software respectively when using XFS."

SEC To Recognize Company Web Sites and Blogs As Channel of Distribution

The SEC has finally acknowledged that the nature of online information is increasingly interactive, and not static. Henceforth, according to a recommendation by its own Special Counsel in the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance, information appearing on company web sites "does not need to satisfy a printer-friendly standard or be in a format comparable to paper-based information, unless the Commission’s rules explicitly require it."

SEC Lets Companies Disclose Via Websites, Blogs

edadams passes along a note in the ABA Journal that reads "Corporations may now sometimes fulfill their public disclosure requirements under Regulation FD by posting information on their websites and blogs, rather than having news releases distributed by third-party companies, according to new guidance issued by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The move is expected to cut compliance costs." Here is the SEC's policy announcement.

Handheld Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer for Digital RF Troubleshooting

Your Bluetooth design is due out the door, but it’s acting strangely. The hopping channels keep changing erratically as if your adaptive frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) device is trying to avoid some sporadic interference. Is it a bug or just interference? With a new hop every 625 μsec and a hop time of just 359 μsec at 2.4 GHz, the chances of your traditional spectrum analyzer catching a sporadic interferer in a timely manner are close to zero.

In the area of shareholder proposals, a company is required to include any proposal that meets procedural requirements unless the subject matter of the proposal falls into one of 13 categories. Two of those categories -- found in rule 14a-8(i)(1) and rule 14a-8(i)(2) -- permit the company to exclude a shareholder proposal if the proposal is improper under state law or if the proposal would cause the company to violate any state, federal, or foreign law to which it is subject. A company that believes it can exclude a proposal on one of these two bases is required to write to the SEC staff and demonstrate the reasons for that belief. As part of that submission, the company must include a supporting opinion of counsel. As a general matter, the SEC staff will rely on such an opinion in considering the submission.
