SCO fined in Germany over Linux claims (ZDNet)

SCO Group has been ordered to pay a €10,000 (Ł7,900) fine in Germany for making claims that Linux includes intellectual property from Unix. SCO has repeatedly claimed that Linux is an unlawful derivative of Unix, but had agreed not to make this claim anymore in Germany, following a lawsuit in 2003. The current case found that the claims were still present in US material available on the site of SCO Group GmbH, the group's German subsidiary. As well as paying the fine, SCO will have to monitor its German presence

(SCO) UnitedLinux Beta Review

IconFirst of all, why is SCO in braces, you'll ask. The reason is, I have not seen anything in this linux distribution that sounds or smells like Caldera/SCO, even though I downloaded it through SCO's UnitedLinux beta tester website. I will mostly focus on the installation (as I am a UNIX installation developer in "real life"), but I will also discuss more parts of the UnitedLinux distribution. For more screenshots of UnitedLinux and its installation procedure, go here.

Grokking SCO's Demise

An anonymous reader writes "You have already heard the news that the SCO Group's US$5 billion threat against Linux is effectively finished. It was the Web site Groklaw.net that broke the news and posted the complete 102-page ruling; after that, it was picked up by mainstream media and trade press. In fact, it's Groklaw that has covered every aspect of SCO's legal fights with Linux vendors IBM , Novell and Red Hat and Linux users Daimler Chrysler and AutoZone ever since paralegal Pamela Jones started the site as a hobby in 2003. This feature does a great job of chronicling Groklaws' hand in the demise of SCO's case."

Novell and SCO Agree on Interest, Trust Amounts; Final Judgment Still in Dispute

"Novell filed today, as per the deadline, two documents, one an unopposed filing regarding interest due Novell by SCO -- SCO has agreed to the sum of $918,122 in prejudgment interest and $489 per day until the final judgment is entered."

SCO's New Approach: Selling a Product

The SCO Group's management is expressing its hope for a product it says could help it emerge from bankruptcy and even launch other products. Those in the open source community, however, remain targets of the company's legal machine, which would continue to pursue suits against Novell and IBM.

Vaster Than Empires, and More Slow

""Vaster Than Empires, and More Slow" is a wonderful short story by Ursula LeGuin. It has nothing to with Linux and FOSS, but I think of the title whenever I read about SCO's latest and endless antics. But some cases move through the courts more quickly, like the recent Jacobsen v. Katzer decision. It took only two years and the second-highest court in the land to affirm that the Artistic License is indeed a copyright license, and not a contract."

Open Source is about community; all the rest is commercial spin

The open source software (OSS) community needs to go back to basics. The “us vs. them” thing over intellectual property, this or that vendor’s choice of how to market its products and/or services, OOXML, quality control, “Halloween memos,” SCO Unix, free vs. open, and especially Microsoft ad nauseum has become so tiring.

UNIX's True Competition: Linux?

IconLinux only has a small percentage of the computing market, however Microsoft already considers it a major competition as the open source OS steals the hearts of many users. Following the hard numbers though, Microsoft also increases its market share on both server and desktop space with time. The only logical explanation is that Linux steals quite a market share from the traditional UNIX providers (SCO, Sun, SGI, HP, IBM). But only Sun seems to truly be in a real Linux trouble, as it is the one with a resistance to Linux integration to its full product range.

Some Pictures Worth a Thousand Words - Caldera OpenLinux Lite

"Interestingly, the CD's Credits file mentions Ralph Yarro, among others. The copyright information states that they used Red Hat's Linux and then added some tweaks of their own to it, and they list files and applications that were not under the GPL, and none of the files in the screenshots are listed as excluded. All the rest, they say, were distributed under the GPL. The Announce file is particularly interesting, because it mentions ELF directly, and that speaks to whether SCO knew what they were distributing under the GPL. I asked Dr Stupid to look at the screenshots and tell me what it means to him, and here's what he told me:
