XML provides flexible, extensible data models and type systems for structured data, and has found wide-acceptance in many domains. XML processing can be slow, however, especially for scientific data, thus leading to the conventional wisdom that XML is not appropriate for such data. Instead, data is stored in specialized binary formats, and is transmitted via work-arounds such as attachments and base64 encoding. This paper presents a binary XML format and implementation for scientific data called Binary XML for Scientific Applications (BXSA). They show that performance is comparable to that of commonly used scientific data formats such as netCDF.

Ponca City, We love you writes "The New Scientist has an amusing story about the seven greatest scientific hoaxes of all time. Of course, there have been serious cases of scientific fraud, such as the stem cell researchers recently found guilty of falsifying data, and the South Korean cloning fraud, but the hoaxes selected point more to human gullibility than malevolence and include the Piltdown Man (constructed from a medieval human cranium); a ten-foot "petrified man" dug up on a small farm in Cardiff; fossils 'found' in Wurzburg, Germany depicting comets, moons and suns, Alan Sokal's paper loaded with nonsensical jargon that was accepted by the journal Social Text; the claim of the Upas tree on the island of Java so poisonous that it killed everything within a 15-mile radius; and Johann Heinrich Cohausen's claim of an elixir produced b

On Friday 28 November, the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF) is to be inaugurated in Louvaine, Belgium, the aim being to boost the consolidation of nanoscience in Europe. The ETSF is made up of ten nodes, i.e. ten European scientific groups, all leaders in the field of modelling and analysis of nanometric-scale processes. The Spanish ETSF node, directed by Professor of Physics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Ángel Rubio, is located at the Jose Mari Korta R+D+I Centre on the San Sebastian (Gipuzkoa) campus. Mr Rubio also holds one of the two Vice-Presidencies of ETSF (responsible for Scientific Development).

Scientists from the PAMELA (Payload for Antimatter/Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics) orbiting spacecraft have published preliminary results, putting an end to months of speculation about the first direct detection of dark matter. The science team was, in essence, "forced" to publish before they had conclusive results because other scientists "pirated" data from the team. “We wanted to make our final results available to the scientific community once the data analysis was finalised,” PAMELA member Mirko Boezio said in an article in Physicsworld.com. “Given that our preliminary conference data are starting to be used by people, we felt this was a necessary step — not least because it provides a proper reference that correctly acknowledges the whole PAMELA collaboration and is available to the scientific community at

(Nanowerk News) Young Europeans are shunning science degrees in greater numbers than ever before. If this trend continues, the EU will start to lag behind China and India in scientific research and development, threatening European competitiveness and prosperity. A workshop held in Maastricht, the Netherlands earlier this year looked at ways of improving the appeal of a scientific career and what the scientific professions must do to attract and retain top quality staff.
