A Binary XML for Scientific Applications

XML provides flexible, extensible data models and type systems for structured data, and has found wide-acceptance in many domains. XML processing can be slow, however, especially for scientific data, thus leading to the conventional wisdom that XML is not appropriate for such data. Instead, data is stored in specialized binary formats, and is transmitted via work-arounds such as attachments and base64 encoding. This paper presents a binary XML format and implementation for scientific data called Binary XML for Scientific Applications (BXSA). They show that performance is comparable to that of commonly used scientific data formats such as netCDF.

Inauguration in Louvaine, Belgium, of new scientific infrastructure to boost nanoscience in Europe

On Friday 28 November, the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF) is to be inaugurated in Louvaine, Belgium, the aim being to boost the consolidation of nanoscience in Europe. The ETSF is made up of ten nodes, i.e. ten European scientific groups, all leaders in the field of modelling and analysis of nanometric-scale processes. The Spanish ETSF node, directed by Professor of Physics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Ángel Rubio, is located at the Jose Mari Korta R+D+I Centre on the San Sebastian (Gipuzkoa) campus. Mr Rubio also holds one of the two Vice-Presidencies of ETSF (responsible for Scientific Development).

District Court Schedules Jury Trial Period in Star Scientific Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against RJ Reynolds

Star Scientific has received a memorandum from the US District Court outlining the framework of proceedings, including a jury trial, in its patent infringement lawsuit against RJ Reynolds Tobacco (RJR). The memorandum, issued by Judge Marvin J. Garbis summarized the results of an initial conference on November 5 with counsel for the parties. It stated that counsel should be prepared for a two to three-week jury trial to be held between April 20 and May 29, 2009. A case planning conference among the parties will be held on November 25 to discuss all pre-trial issues.
