EPIC SBC runs hot and cold

WinSystems announced an EPIC-format, extended-temperature single board computer (SBC) that runs Linux. Aimed at industrial applications, the EPX-855-G is equipped with an Intel Celeron-M clocked at 1GHz (fanless) or 1.8GHz Pentium (fan), and can operate at temperatures ranging from -40 to 158 degrees F.

Tiny SBC builds on Cortex-A8 SoC

Gumstix launched a tiny fourth-generation version of its open-source, gumstick-shaped SBC (single-board computer). The Linux-based Overo Earth measures 17 x 58 x 4.2mm, 40 percent smaller than the earlier Verdex, and it has switched to the ARM Cortex-A8-based Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 3503 system-on-chip (SoC).

Fanless EPIC SBC Supports Wired/Wireless Communications

Suitable for wired or wireless communication apps, the EPX-855-G, an EPIC-compatible SBC, operates fanless with a 1-GHz Celeron-M processor or an optional 1.8-GHz Pentium M processor with a fan. Operational over a temperature range from -40°C to +70°C, it provides two Ethernet and four USB ports plus four COM channels and, optionally, it supports 802.11 wireless Ethernet, GSA/GPRS cellular modem, CDMA cellular modem, ZigBee RF modules, and 56-Kbph global-compliant dial-up modems. The board measures 115 mm x 165 mm and supports Linux, Windows XP embedded, and a software development tool set including device drivers and libraries. It also supports other x86-compatible real time operating systems, such as QNX and VxWorks. Price for the fanless 1-GHz board is $695 each/1.

MEN: VMEbus PC used in CERN particle accelerator

The new VMEbus SBC from MEN Mikro Elektronik will be used in CERN’s particle accelerator. The A20 supports a multitude of Intel Core 2 types and pairs outstanding reliability in computing with fast data transmission. The A20 single-board computer is the latest 6U VMEbus board of MEN's product range. Being open for any user requirements, the robust card supports a multitude of Intel processors - from the Core Duo or Core 2 Duo with 1.5 GHz down to single-core Celeron M versions. Due to the Tundra TSI148 bridge controller the SBC supports fast and reliable data throughput using 2eSST. This protocol doubles the theoretical VMEbus transaction bandwidth to up to 320 MB/s.

Tiny $75 SBC gains baseboard

Chennai, India-based E-con Systems announced a baseboard for its SODIMM-sized, Marvell PXA270-based processor module. The baseboard adds an LCD touchscreen, USB, serial ports, SDIO slot, and camera interfaces to the company's Linux-ready eSOM270 module, available in volume for about $75.

WinSystems announced a Linux-friendly SBC (single board computer) using the venerable STD bus. Offered as a migration path for "key industrial customers," the fanless LPM-LX800 offers an AMD Geode LX800, up to 1GB of RAM, up to 16GB of CompactFlash, and four serial ports, says WinSystems.

Targeting control and automation, visual inspection, digital surveillance, and network security applications, the Linux-ready SHB102 supports 16GB of DDR3, and has two gigabit Ethernet and a dozen USB ports.

One of HST's Cameras Is Back In Action

StupendousMan writes "One of the two big cameras aboard the Hubble Space Telescope is the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, or WFPC2 for short. As the most recent HST status report indicates, the camera was recently powered up again and sent commands to take some test images. Today (Sunday, Oct 26), I received E-mail from a colleague at STScI indicating that the calibration images were 'nominal.' That's NASA-speak for 'fine and dandy.' The E-mail goes on to say 'The data look nominal, indicating that Hubble optical imaging capabilities are in fine shape. (We can expect more glorious Hubble images in the near future.) ... Science with WFPC2 has resumed, and plans are underway to restore ACS/SBC to service this coming week.' Let's hope that the other big instrument, the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), also comes back to life successfull
