Texas police say 12-year-old girl drove mom to bar

LONGVIEW, Texas -- A 35-year-old Texas woman has been jailed after police say she made her 12-year-old daughter drive her to a bar. Police in Longview say they watched a minivan turn into a driveway without signaling on Wednesday and bump into a home at a low speed. They say the car was driven by Jennifer Lynn Rosenberg's daughter.

Turns Out People Say They're Concerned About Privacy, But They're Not

Well, this shouldn't surprise very many people, but following on plenty of earlier studies that have made it clear that most people don't do much to protect their privacy, a new study out of the UK pretty much states the obvious: people say they're concerned about privacy, but they sure don't act that way. The study found 84% of users say they carefully guard their info online -- but when tested, 89% of people actually did give away info in the same exact survey. To be fair, the specific set of questions was first asking people if they carefully guard their income info, followed later by a question asking them what income bracket they fell into. It's reasonable to think that some folks believe that the bracket is not the same as giving away their actual income -- which is what the first question implied.

Windows 7 engineers' blog to say much about nothing

Microsoft will be more guarded in what it shares with the outside world as its engineers busy themselves working on Windows 7, according to a new Engineering Windows 7 blog created by two senior W7 engineering managers, Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky. The authors say they will post "regularly" but that Microsoft will be "maintaining a little bit more control over the communication around Windows 7." They add: "We ... definitely learned some lessons about 'disclosure' and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid." There will be a lot of white space to fill in their blog if they're duty-bound not to say much.

Blog Buzz: the Verdict on Last Night's Obama-McCain Debate, Another Strategy Change, and the New Mortgage Proposal

Politico has declared it the "worst debate in history," but bloggers still had plenty to say about last night's town-hall showdown between Barack Obama and John McCain. The consensus among liberal and conservative bloggers is that Obama won, prevailing against McCain with his professorial manner, coherent answers, and his calm, presidential demeanor. Despite expectations that the town-hall format would favor McCain, he did just OK. Liberal bloggers say he seemed "clumsy and unsure of himself," failed to shake up or change the direction of his flailing campaign, and had some "whoppers" throughout the night. Conservative bloggers say he was good but it "wasn't enough," and he failed to make Obama seem dangerous. Both liberals and conservatives agree Tom Brokaw was a subpar moderator who put a damper on the town-hall aspect of the debate.

Blog Buzz: McCain-Palin Crowds Get Angry, Troopergate Report, Barack Obama and ACORN

The recent rowdiness among McCain-Palin supporters at rallies has drawn more scorn from liberal bloggers today, who say that John McCain and Sarah Palin are encouraging these "festivals of hate" at which supporters call Obama a "traitor" and shout "Off with his head!" Other bloggers say the GOP campaign is "appalling" and wonder if the "toxic cocktail" of "hate, fear, and ignorance" will pay off come Election Day. TPM bloggers are outraged that McCain and Palin have not condemned the behavior of some of their supporters and say that the candidates are responsible for creating the hysteria. Michael Crowley at The New Republic reminds us that Democrats exhibited similar rage toward Bush in 2004. Ann Althouse says there's nothing wrong with "candidates attacking their opponents or crowds becoming enthusiastic.

Blog Buzz: Reviews of Palin's and Biden's Debate Performances, Schwarzenegger Needs a Loan for California

Sarah Palin's performance at last night's vice presidential debate gets mixed reviews from bloggers, who are generally split along party lines. Those on the left say it was clear her answers were rehearsed and consisted of talking points that she was clearly reading off her prepared notes. This, liberals say, and the fact that moderator Gwen Ifill did not ask follow-up questions, saved Palin from crashing and burning and gaffe-ing, like she did in recent interviews. But while she sounded more competent, Political Animal, Matthew Yglesias, and TPM say she still had a few whoppers. Michael Crowley says she did nothing to hurt herself but little to help John McCain. Conservative bloggers thought that while Ifill was biased toward Joe Biden, Palin still managed to pull off a sparkling, terrific performance (even a "grand slam" for the first h
