Globalstar Announces New Low Price for SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger(TM)

Globalstar Canada Satellite Co. Mitsubishi Electric wins USD203m satellite contract from SingTel

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has awarded Mitsubishi Electric an SGD200 million (USD203 million) contract to build its ST-2 communications satellite. The new orbiter will increase the Singaporean firm’s reach in emerging markets, including in the Middle East. The satellite will also allow SingTel to fulfil the growing demand for mobile satellite services in the region, such as its ‘Office-At-Sea’ maritime applications products. The ST-2 satellite, which is due to be delivered in 2010, will effectively replace the ST-1 platform; more than 50% of its capacity has already been signed up by regional customers prior to its launch. SingTel will co-own ST-2 with Chunghwa Telecom owning approximately 62% of the joint venture while Chunghwa will own the rest.

PARIS -- The GeoEye-1 high-resolution optical Earth observation satellite will not enter commercial service until December due to software glitches on the satellite's attitude-control system that went undetected in ground testing, GeoEye Inc. officials said Nov. 11.

Red Hat Spacewalk Expands Linux Management

IconRed Hat's Spacewalk project is getting into place. The project wants to feed development of the Red Hat Network Satellite product for system management. Satellite is a critical tool for Red Hat users as it provides management capabilities for multiple servers for software deployment and updates. Almost six months ago, Red Hat kicked off the Spacewalk project in an effort to create an open source version of Network Satellite that would serve as the upstream project that drives development. According to Red Hat executives, Spacewalk is still in the process of getting aligned with Network Satellite releases in terms of the development model. As well, Spacewalk is now gearing up to replace Network Satellite's proprietary Oracle database backend with an open source database.
