Now Even the PS3 Surfs Faster than Explorer

It's a sad day, Microsoft, when Sony goes on record that their PS3 browser is faster than IE7. Firmware 2.5 is not only bringing the PlayStation 3 internet browser Flash 9, but its Javascript update promises to speed up the browser by an impressive 2.8X. Sony admits that they're still slower than Google Chrome, but as for IE7, it's eating their dust. If Sony's claims are true, it's straight up sad that the PS3's browser UI is worse than almost any browser on the market...including some on mobile devices. [IGN via Kotaku]

All atwitter over a blogging robot

I don't know what it is about sad robots that makes them such objects of empathy. This particular sad robot belongs to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Its name is the Mars Phoenix lander, an ungainly little device, shaped a bit like a large card table, with a couple of octagonal solar panels sticking out the side. Launched in conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency, it has been parked up around the Martian polar circle since it landed in May, digging around for evidence of water.

Fraud Threat Halts Knuth's Hexidecimal-Dollar Checks

Barence writes "You may be aware of Donald Knuth, the creator of TeX and author of The Art of Computer Programming, who used to post checks to anyone who spotted an error in one of his books — one hexadecimal dollar, or $2.56. No one cashed them though. This blogger has two of them proudly on his wall, but the sad news is that modern day bank fraud has put a stop to Knuth's much-loved way of keeping his books free of errors." (Here's Knuth's own post about the sad change.)

MIT's Huggable Robotic Bear Keeps Ill People From Feeling Sad

Normally you think science, lasers, and silicon chips when someone says "MIT," but Huggable is an MIT invention nonetheless: it's another smart robot companion, a bit like Paro meets Teddy Ruxpin. Its body is covered in sensors and motors, including webcams behind his eyes and a speaker in his nose, and its designed to respond to you and react like an electronic pet. But it's a little smarter than Paro: it can act as a telepresence device, echoing the movements of a remotely-manipulated Huggable.

Phoenix Mars Lander Declared Dead

SpuriousLogic sends in a sad note from the BBC: "NASA says its Phoenix lander on the surface of Mars has gone silent and is almost certainly dead. Engineers have not heard from the craft since Sunday 2 November when it made a brief communication with Earth. Phoenix, which landed on the planet's northern plains in May, had been struggling in the increasing cold and dark of an advancing winter. The US space agency says it will continue to try to contact the craft but does not expect to hear from it."
