gadgetopia is one of many who wrote to tell us about the many rumors flying around that Microsoft may be aiming another deal at Yahoo, this time for $20 billion. The story was apparently originally broken by the UK-based site Times Online, and contained lots of details about the supposed deal. Since then, Ross Levinsohn, reported to be part of the new management team, has denied there is any truth to these rumors, leading to questions about where all of this supposed information came from. Yahoo has declined to comment officially.

In this latest downturn, the two getting the most play are that the Verizon/Alltel deal might not go down as planned or that Verizon might pay the penalty and then try for a less expensive deal. Meanwhile, the yearly rumors about Microsoft buying RIM are back in full bloom because of the recent turmoil on Wall Street.

Despite rumors to the contrary, a source close to Microsoft (MSFT: sentiment, chart, options) told Dow Jones that the Redmond, Washington-based software giant has no plans to follow in Apple's (AAPL) footsteps by launching its own smartphone device. The source stated, "It's clearly not Microsoft's strategy to make phone hardware. Our core competency is creating an operating system and a set of services that enable our partners to produce great phones."

stevejobs.jpg* Apple building search engine, TechCrunch hears. "We’ve received multiple (if thin) reports that Apple is working on a search engine of some sort. At first glance, the rumors make sense. Apple’s Safari browser has 6-7% market share, and currently uses Google as the search engine for both the standard and iPhone/iPod versions (unlike other browsers, you don’t have a choice)... Also, Apple can’t be super pleased with Google’s competition to the iPhone with Android... But one important fact that isn’t checking out - if Apple were building a search engine, they’d be hiring search experts and engineers. We’ve talked to a ton of them at all the big companies, and while some of them heard the same rumors, none have lost search employees to Apple, or heard of any specific hirings.

VTB has received no share swap proposals from the UK-based bank Barclays, Russia's Deputy PM and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin told journalists today. He added that no such proposals have been submitted to the Russian bank's supervisory board. This statement was made in response to today's media reports that Barclays could swap a small stake (nearly 5 percent) with a major Russian state-run bank. Sberbank was said to have considered such a possibility, but its supervisory board declined the deal. It has also been suggested that the share swap could take place between Barclays and VTB.
