Cash Lifeline For Bletchley Park

Smivs writes "Bletchley Park, the home to the allied codebreakers during WWII, and a major computing heritage centre, has been given a financial lifeline, reports the BBC.The grant of £330,000 will be used to undertake urgent roof works as the rooms of the Grade II-listed mansion, replete with painted ceilings, timber panelling, and ornate plasterwork, are at risk because the roof has been patched rather than renovated so many times during the 130 years of the mansion's history. The donation follows efforts to highlight the dilapidated state of the huts and other buildings at Bletchley. Discussions are also in progress on a further three-year, £600,000 funding programme for the historic site. 'Bletchley Park played a fundamental role in the Allies winning the Second World War and is of great importance to the history of Europe,' said Dr S

Video games: Family fun or path to loneliness?

I am lying on the roof of a shoddy shot-up building with my sniper trying to stay below the radar. Bullets are whizzing by and bombs going off everywhere. I’m waiting patiently for my next victims when suddenly I see three men running towards my building. Without a moment’s hesitation, I aim through my scope to get a good shot at them before anyone else notices them. They are mine for the taking. My goal is to kill as many people as I can.

Master blogger : Why vote?

Let's just suspend disbelief for a moment. Let's say we all live in a country where we have a roof over our heads, everyone in the country has food, water, education and electricity. Crime isn't a problem, no one is dying from HIV/Aids, and quality health care is available to everyone who needs it. Will my vote make the slightest difference because SA is a perfect nation?

The Killers play it dead right

"This place is too pretty for us," says The Killers' singer Brandon Flowers of the Royal Albert Hall - presumably referring to its opulent dome roof, tiers and arches, rather than its stage, which for this gig his road crew has crowded with plastic palm trees.

Krejza's happy moment

What do you have to do to get a sizeable Test-match crowd in India? The Vidharbha Cricket Association (VCA) built a swanky new stadium, put a roof over all the stands, and had chairs for all of its 45,000 capacity. Ricky Ponting even said the stadium was "terrific" and yet there were fewer than 500 people present to watch the first ball of Sourav Ganguly's last - and VVS Laxman's 100th - Test. The only colour at the start of the match belonged to numerous empty rows of blue, green, yellow, pink and purple chairs. The fact the stadium is around 17 km outside the city and the poor transport facilities probably had something to do with it.

Can the US Stop the Illegal Export of Its Technology?

coondoggie writes "Maybe people are more desperate or maybe there's just too much opportunity to make a quick buck but whatever the excuse, attempts to illegally export technology from the US has gone through the roof. The Department of Justice this week said it has placed criminal charges or convictions against more than 255 defendants in the past two fiscal years — 145 in 2008 and 110 in 2007. That 255 number represents more than a six-fold increase from fiscal year 2005, when the DOJ said about 40 individuals or companies were convicted of over 100 criminal violations of export control laws."
