Smivs writes "The BBC reports that Earth's most ancient rocks, with an age of 4.28 billion years, have been found on the shore of Hudson Bay, Canada. Writing in Science journal, a team reports finding that a sample of Nuvvuagittuq greenstone is 250 million years older than any rocks known. It may even hold evidence of activity by ancient life forms. If so, it would be the earliest evidence of life on Earth — but co-author Don Francis cautioned that this had not been established. 'The rocks contain a very special chemical signature — one that can only be found in rocks which are very, very old,' he said."

Smivs writes "The BBC reports that NASA is to send its Mars rover Opportunity on a two-year trek to try to reach a crater called Endeavour. The robot will have to move about 11km to get to its new target — a distance that would double what it has already achieved on the planet. Endeavour is much bigger than anything investigated to date, and will allow a broader range of rocks to be studied. Detailed satellite imagery from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will help pick out the best route ahead; and new software recently uploaded to Opportunity will enable the rover to make its own decisions about how best to negotiate large rocks in its path. Opportunity has just emerged from the 800m-wide Victoria Crater. Endeavour, by comparison, is 22km across.

Swedish designer Peter Thuvander likes yo-yo's so much that he designed an iPhone charger concept around them. Called the iYo (what else?), the device charges its lithium ion battery cell with an OLPC crank that's turned using the spinning power of a yo-yo. "The remote control needs only 30 cranks—which is nothing when you yo-yo," he said. Just 30 cranks and your dignity, Peter. I kid, of course, being someone who sleeps with a Duncan yo-yo under his pillow. The video demonstrates what a good idea this is:

Kid Rock is ruling summer ‘08: His smash hit “All Summer Long” — which mashes up the super-familiar riffs of Lynyrd Skynryd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” — has charted on rock, country, top 40 and adult-contemporary radio. Powered by the single, his album Rock N Roll Jesus — which came out way back in October 2007 — has been climbing the charts, selling over 1.3 million copies and landing at Number Four in late July. How’d it happen? Check out Austin Scaggs’ story from the new issue:

So-called "open source" intelligence -- spook-speak for tidbits taken from newspapers, internet postings, and TV shows -- is starting to play a major role in the nation's spy agencies. That's a major change, in a world that's used to relying on secret satellites and clandestine agents. But old habits die hard. Open source intelligence may come from unclassified material that's available to anyone with a TV or an internet connection. CIA chief Michael Hayden says the finished products have to be kept out of public view. They're just too sensitive for average folks to see.
