When Moons and Rings Collide

This is absolutely astounding! The Cassini spacecraft captured a collision between Saturn's moon Prometheus and the F ring, which creates a "streamer;" material being pulled from the ring by the moon's gravity, leaving behind a dark channel. There's even a movie of the event! The creation of these streamers and channels occurs in a cycle that repeats during each of Prometheus' orbits. During its 14.7 hour orbit of Saturn, when Prometheus reaches apoapse, or where it is farthest away from Saturn and closest to the F ring, the oblong moon draws a streamer of material from the ring. But since Prometheus orbits faster than the material in the ring, this new streamer is pulled from a different location in the ring about 3.2 degrees (in longitude) ahead of the previous one.

Saturn's Ring Disturbed

Saturn, the celestial version of the “Lord of the Rings,� doesn't just have one ring, as many might believe. In fact, what is perceived from pictures as a single, compact ring is formed of seven distinct smaller ring divisions, labeled from A to F. The main, more massive and compact rings are (from the outermost to the innermost) A, B and C, with D as a fainter, inwards one, almost touching the Saturnine clouds. The F, G and E rings are located outside of the A ring (in this order), and E is by far the widest (302,000 km, comparing to the others which are 5,000 to 30,500 km wide).

When viewed in visible light, as in the picture above on the left, the galaxy called NGC 404 appears as just a white blob. Mirach is a red giant star that looms large in visible light, hiding NGC 404 in its glare, and therefore was nicknamed "The Ghost of Mirach" But when the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) spied the galaxy in ultraviolet light, a spooky ring materialized and the region came to "life." This ring, seen in blue in the picture on the right, contains new stars — a surprise considering that the galaxy was previously thought to be dead. "We thought this celestial ghost was essentially dead, but we've been able to show that it has an extended ring of new stars.
