Law360, New York (November 21, 2008) -- ICU Medical suffered a blow in its patent battle with rival Medegen MMS Inc. Thursday when a federal appeals court reversed a lower court ruling that ICU Medical had not infringed Medegen's patent for a needle-free intravenous connection.

How To Cloak Objects At a Distance

KentuckyFC writes "All invisibility cloaks to date work by hiding an object embedded inside them. Now a group of physicists have worked out how to remotely cloak objects that sit outside a cloaking material. The trick is to make the cloaking material with optical properties that are exactly complementary to the space outside them. Complementary means that the material reverses the effect the space has on a plane wave of light passing through it. To an observer this space would appear to vanish. The scientists say that to cloak an object sitting outside the cloaking material, first measure its optical properties and then embed a "complementary image" of the object within the cloak. So a plane wave is first distorted by the object but then restored to a plane by the complementary image of the object within the cloak (abstract).

Software Patent Reform Debate

In a decision likely destined for the Supreme Court for what would be a landmark decision about the scope of patents in the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals has recently upheld a ruling issued by a patent court stating that software and business methods can be patented only if they are implemented by a machine or transform something into a new or different thing. The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals effectively reverses a decade-long trend of expanded patent protection.

Hitachi intros 500GB encrypted notebook drive...

Hitachi is releasing a new family of Travelstar 2.5-inch drives with improved security features, and reduced power use for longer battery life. The Travelstar 5K500.B line will be available in several sizes ranging from 160 to 500GB operating at 5400RPM with an 8MB cache. Hitachi says it expects the 5K500.B will be the first hard drive line to comply with the new Storage Security specification being finalized by the Trusted Security Group. The optional Bulk Data Encryption feature encrypts data as it is written to the drive and reverses this as information is retrieved, preventing casual data theft online.
